chapter 10

Author: Qi River's Old Stream

Chris said his goodbyes to Elise and managed to get himself smacked a few more times for some of his off hand comments and began making his way back to their home. After about 5 minutes of walking he found a public bench and decided to sit down for a minute. He watched as everyone went about their buisness with smiles on their faces. Chris could not help but to be envious of them, Going through their lives haggling, lifting working their same routine unchanging....happy. He  knew that Elise was right he had to atleast try to take things more serious, many people in the world would give their left arm for the chance to attend the academy that he was going to. The only reason he was able to attend this school was thanks to an old friend he had met some years ago and managed to help get him registered using theirs status to push it through.

Exhaling a deep breath Chris got up getting ready to head back home. As he stood small person ran into him knocking eachother to the ground. Chris stood up and began dusting himself off. When he turned his attention to the person who had run into him they were already on their feet and took off running without saying a single word.

'wow rude much' he thought to himself. Following only a couple yards behind the person a small group of 3 others began to run past one of them a middle aged man stopped and apologized quickly. "I apologize for my companion, but there is an emergency and they must get home fast."

Chris just blankly nodded "sure no problem" The man wasted no more time and took off after his companions waving over his shoulder. well guess i wasted enough time. may as well get heading home, ill probably arrive the same time as Elise.  He continued to make his way home which was more on the outskirts of the city while taking in the sights, browsing some merchant stalls, all while enjoying the nice warm summer evening. While he got a few blocks from his home his ears couldn't help but to catch something interesting. As he got closer to an alley way that was up ahead of him he could hear multiple people arguing.

"If you are aware of who we are then you would be smart to step aside and not get in my way." said a feminine voice.

"Oh we know exactly who you are and what you are doing. We definitely cannot step aside, as a matter of fact we have orders to make sure you dont leave the city." said a male voice.

" If we let you go we will definitely be dead. If we follow our orders not only do we live but we get rewarded for our efforts. You can see the dillema we have here right ?"

Chris stopped and peaked his head around the corner. From what he could see there was a group of four people surrounded eight. From looks of it out of the four people surrounded only two of them were actually fighters they were trying their best to keep the non combatants behind them and their backs to a wall. Chris immideiately recognized them as the group that had bumped into him earlier and took off running.

"If its a matter of money then we would be more then happy to pay you double what you would recieve."

"We could also just take that amount and anything else you have on you which im going to assume you probably are holding out on us."

"Even though some of you will die?"

"Meh were all pretty shallow here, were ok with a little loss." one of the hold up goons said

"HELP!" one of the hooded people.  The cry for help echoed off the walls of the alley, and echoed through the air. The small group looked and listened hopeful for someone to come.

While Christopher was extremely relieved that Brianna had escaped he could not let his guard down. There was multiple times he had to duck or hide somewhere as the soldiers ransacked their village. He would pass houses and could here things being smashed broken or hear someone excited about something they had found. It wasn't long until he reached his home only to discover that it was empty. Filled with fear and panic he looked around the house only to discover that there was no signs of a stuggle, no blood, most of all no bodies. Christopher was both happy and terrified."Well come on then you god damn cowards!" Christopher could hear his fathers voice accompanied by weapons clashing. Chris ran outside, his mother was being shielded by his father who was holding his sword out front of him. There was already the bodies of five soldiers around him, although anyone could see he was beginning to tire and had multiple small cuts on him, Worst of all they were surrounded. One of th

"Please sir, We what did could we have possibly done to deserve this ?" A man could be heard begging."It's quite simple you were born in this useless kingdom." A man responded in an arrogant voice. 'This useless kingdom?' Chris thought to himself. He risked a quick peak and was shocked at what he saw. All of the men were armored, but what really caught his attention was many of the men were holding the banner of the Eternal Empire. 'What the hell!?' He knew The Eternal Empire and the Kingdom had been walking on egg shells for a while but There had been no declaration of war, he also knew for a fact it wasnt like their village had been hostile or attacked anyone. What could we have possibly done to deserve this."Please please let us go and you can help yourselves to anything you want.""I'm growing tired of listening to this sniveling, go ahead and kill all the men." The leader ordered. Without hesitation the soldiers moved into position raising their weapons, the

When Christopher and Brianna arrived at the lake they continued to talk about plans for the festival as Chris began his work chopping down a tree and cutting it up into fire wood. Around noon He took a lunch break sharing the Freshly baked rolls and his lunch with Brianna."So I never asked you before, but since you have decided to court me I suppose it's something I should ask you. Are you going to be like the rest of the boys in our village and intend to join the military and become knights? The way i've seen you fight you're probably the only one who would stand a chance." She asked him with a slight smile."Hey now who said I intend to court you?" Brianna stopped and put a hand on her hip and just stared at him. " Ok so maybe that is the goal. Honestly though I don't really have an interest in joining the military. I was thinking ill either learn more from my father and do smithing, or I guess im pretty good with numbers from what I was told and thought of trying to

Six years ago"Chris hurry and wake your ass up already. You have to go cut some wood today. Hurry and see if your mother needs anything then grab your lunch." Jeff, Christophers father called out kicking his door wide open."Yes father." Chris mumbled. He lazily rolled out of his bed standing half dead looking, Jeff honestly wasn't really sure that Christophers shoulders and form could possibly slouch / sag more then it already was."Im coming.." Chris mumbled as he walked towards the door with his eyes half closed. Jeff could only shake his head as he walked out of Christophers room. A few seconds after leaving the room, out in the kitchen a loud WOMP could be heard. Jeff didn't even bother to look back, he was already used to this. Who he called zombie Chris had just walked face first into the wall next to the doorway."Trish every day I spend around that boy i'm leaning towards you had an affair at some point, there is no way thats my child." Everyone grabbed their weapons and began to move towards Christopher, but Thomas moved in front of them holding up his hands blocking their path."Your honor is bull shit!" A small smile began to spread over his face. " Many people called me a monster over the years but I can say this much, if I am a monster just know it was your people that set me on the path to becoming a monster. Do me a favor and remember one thing. I hate your people, don't give me a reason.""Hayden, you good?" Thomas asked over his shoulder. As if a haze was lifted from Christopher his narrowed eyes opened wide and he saw the pale terrified look on Sarah's face, his hand still around her throat which he could feel her trembling underneath his grip. He blinked his eyes a few times them darting in almost every direction, slowly he released his grip on her."I- I am sorry." He muttered under his breath and began to walk away into the woods. Thomas lowered his hands and went back to his se
