LOGINThe fire was back and burning through Todd Peter’s. He was in a rage; he was angry and he did not care. As soon as Darcy had hung up after their radio conversation, Todd went into a frenzy. He had kept breathing during the conversation, hoping that she would hear his calm voice and believe that he just wanted to talk. But her ‘no’ had angered him, Who the hell does she think she is?
Todd slammed the desk. The papers scattered across the table, sending a few sheets falling to the floor.
‘Get her back here,’ he yelled.
Pete was calmly sitting at the computer watching the screen, tapping away at the keyboard. He stared at the screen, wondering why Darcy had rejected the suggestion. It was going well, then suddenly, something had interrupted the process.
‘Get her back here, Now!’ Todd yelled again, pacing up and down while he screamed. He noticed Pete sigh in frustration, ignoring his tantrum. All this did was fuel the fire burning through every vein in Todd’s body. He stomped over to the workstation. ‘What. Happened?’ he said through gritted teeth, trying to breathe. ‘What happened?’ The fire was cooling, Todd’s words were calmer, he remembered to breathe. ‘Not sure,’ responded Pete. ‘It was ok. She was responding. Something happened and it went wild. She ain’t getting on that train.’
Todd closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead. Breathe, he told himself. Breathe. There was no choice but a reset. He looked at the map, shoved his slender fingers on the keyboard and tapped a few commands. Jones’ location appeared alongside Darcy’s. She was nearby. Jones was clearly incapacitated, wounded or even dead and with her training, she could have killed him, but she probably did not even realize it.
‘Tell me Pete. How do we get her on the train?’ asked Todd in his calm voice. Both men looked at the clock. Three hours until the train leaves. It was essential that Darcy got on it. The sun was setting, the temperature was dropping, it would be a cold night. The freezing air was getting into the room reducing any heat left, which they both felt and were now wrapped up in thick winter jackets. ‘It’s damn cold in here,’ said Pete, shivering a little. ‘I’ve tried sending the suggestion again. But it’s not being received by the implant. We need her here.’Todd shook his head, ‘Where the hell is Williams?’ He looked at the tiny dot on the screen, labelled ‘Williams.’ ‘By the bank,’ Pete responded. ‘I can’t get him on the radio.’ Todd was flicking switches on the radio in frustration, desperately trying to get it to work. ‘Give it here.’ Pete grabbed the radio from Todd and slammed in on the desk. Todd flinched and the radio buzzed into life with the familiar static. Pete passed it back with a smile. ‘Williams. Do you copy?’ asked Todd. Nothing but static. ‘Do you copy? Williams, do you copy.’ Remember to breathe, Todd told himself. The only sound was static, dead air followed by broken clicks and then the monotone voice of Williams. ‘Williams here.’ The radio went back to static. ‘Get over to Jones,’ said Todd, skipping any pleasantries. ‘Something is wrong.’Todd gave him Jones’ last location and William’s dot started moving away from the bank where he had been waiting. Jones and Darcy were still in the same spot, neither had moved. ‘Why isn’t Darcy moving?’ questioned Pete, wondering what could have caused her to remain motionless. ‘Maybe Jones got her at the same time. Perhaps they are both dead,’ answered Todd. ‘Maybe. Perhaps.’ Pete’s response was uncertain.
Todd glanced at the paperwork from control and sighed. It was supposed to be an easy plan. He had assured them that Darcy was ready. She would save John Lennon and then move on to the real plan. Any suggestion they gave her would be accepted as her own. He remembered that stupid journal she carried everywhere and it had been filled with info about John Lennon. He then started to have doubts. What about notes on the train bombing? Had anyone added those? Darcy had followed the directions about John Lennon and even though it was a mess, it had still happened. Then the new suggestion. Get the device back from the bank, board the train and plant the bomb in the toilet. She was supposed to believe it was a ‘blocker’; a unit that would disable any attempt to detonate an explosive device. It was all in the journal. Why had she not seen the new notes. Once the mission was complete, Darcy would use the device to time jump home, allowing the train to explode in the past, killing the Senator who was on board. Darcy would believe she had stopped a tragic accident and would never know what really happened. With the Senators death, Ronald Regan would never be elected as President next month and Jimmy Carter would win the race for the 40th President of the United States. Control had planned this and these changes would have a big impact on the future, allowing for more Governmental power and ultimately more authority for Control. Reagan’s policies limited the Government and the powers they had, but with Carter and other Presidents to follow, Control would gain more influence as time went on. These changes were planned for all over the world, to change Governments and key figures throughout history and alter the future.
Pete coughed loudly, mumbled something and interrupted Todd’s thought. ‘What?’ Todd said rudely. ‘You think we can do this?’ ‘Do what?’ ‘The reset. We don’t have all the equipment.’ Pete pointed around the room, highlighting the limited equipment they had. ‘We have what we need. It won’t be pretty, but it will work.’ ‘Do you want me to get things ready, if Darcy is brought here?’ ‘Not if Pete. When. When Darcy is brought here.’Pete raised his eyebrows at Todd. Todd glared at him. ‘What?’ he said again, raising his voice slightly. ‘Noth…’ Pete Stammered. ‘Nothing,’ finishing the sentence.
The radio crackled into life. The monotone voice of Williams called through the tiny muffled speakers. ‘Todd. It’s Williams. Do you copy?’Todd grabbed the radio off the table, pressed the speak button and responded to Williams call. ‘Todd here.’ ‘I found Jones.’ He paused and let the radio go back to static. ‘and what else,’ blurted out Todd angrily. ‘He is unconscious. A bad cut on his head, messed up face, and no sign of Darcy.’Todd looked at the map. The marker indicated that she was nearby, maybe down a side street, and she wasn’t moving. ‘She’s not far from you. Take a left down the next alley.’William’s marker moved across the map as he walked and turned down the alley. He was closing in on Darcy’s location. The static faded from the radio and Williams said he had found her, also unconscious.
