This was one of my last journeys and I hoped for a useful one since it was an international conference. All the cardiologists from all over the world would be present and I was no exception. In all my thirteen years of experience, I had learned a lot but most importantly I learned to always put the first life of a human being.
„Hello, this is your captain speaking! All the passengers are kindly asked to fasten their seat belts as we are about to take off. Welcome aboard and have a safe flight!”
That was our cue to choose for safety so we did as we were told. I hated being trapped but this was for my own good. And besides, it was not going to take long.
„Sir, are you all right?” a warm voice spoke to me as I tried to make myself more comfortable
„Oh, yes I am…I will be…” I answered with a shaky voice which I don’t recognize either.
„There is no need to worry about it! As soon as we take off I will personally bring you a large glass of water.” she tried to calm me patting my shoulder.
„Thank you…” I muttered slowly fixing her with my already anxious eyes.
„You are very welcome, sir!”
It’s been an hour and we’re still flying. I had my promised water so I was feeling quite all right. I wonder how Maria was doing. I took my wallet out of my pocket and gaze at her picture. Two hazel eyes were staring at me. I know I promised her I would stay for her mother’s anniversary as three days ago I didn’t even have a ticket. Got lucky with some guy whose performance was postponed in the US so I bought the ticket from him; lucky me I guess!
„Is this your wife?” another low, soft voice caught my attention. It was a middle-aged woman, to early wrinkled face and as far as I could see a little afraid of flying.
„Yes, she is. Maria…”
”That is a beautiful name”
„Thank you!” I said while I adjust my position so I could see her better; after a while, the stewardess came with snacks and drinks. We abandoned the subject and had a proper meal. I needed it badly.
Another an hour passed but my fatigue was making its presence felt so I decided to take a nap.
A violent jolt and a precipitous but calm voice of the stewardess that was urging us to fasten our seat belts as we are about to have some turbulence above the ocean woke me up. I was usually not afraid of flying but this kind of shaking was so brutal that was getting on my nerves.
I fastened my seat belt and for the first time in my life, I started praying, slowly, in my mind. Panic set in quickly and in no time women and children began to scream their lungs out. I lifted the small blind from the window and I was horrified to realize that the plane was losing altitude, and very fast.
The woman beside me was calmer than I expected. She was also praying. A dark thought crossed my mind in that precise moment, as I watched her pray; we were going to die!
Maria, my Maria…I wonder what she was doing? I didn’t even feel when tears rolled down my cheeks, but they were. A sharp pain cut right through my being, trying to cope with the thought that I would never see her again; that she would suffer when they would deliver her the news of my death; she would scream when she would realize that in two fateful seconds all was over and I left her all alone; she would get so damn hurt and feel guilty for my untimely disappearance; she would curse this plane over and over again until she would have no more tears to shed; she would curse even God for allowing this to happen and when she would have to bury me, or what’s left of me she will become a ghost and a shadow of what she used to be.
My Lord, it hurt so much, but there was nothing in my powers that I could do right now just to embrace my fate. What kind of fate was this? Then I thought maybe I should hear her one last time. Would that be selfish of me? Staring at my phone, I started dialing Maria and by the time a gentle voice said “Hello?” all my courage faded away. What was I going to say to her? That this was the last time she hears me? That her angel voice was going to be the last music to my ears before I die? In my shock, I didn’t realize she was listening to all the screams in the plane.
„Marco? Marco, please...talk to me, baby! What is going on? Why is everybody screaming? Marco?” I heard Maria’s voice as it was in a dream and I knew it was for the last time.
„Maria…I love you…” I whispered to her trying to make this goodbye as painless as possible.
„Marco, please no, hello? Hello…”
The end of it was hot as hell, painful as death and cold as ice; and then darkness…
