LOGINMorning came, and darkness paved way letting the sun rays shine through. The blaring sound of car horns could be heard and children and teenagers could be seen as they held out their provisions for sale. Those who had white-collar jobs drove their flashy cars as they hurriedly tried to overcome the traffic and get to their place of work. It was as if the world was in a rumble. Edna woke up from a bad dream only to find herself in the situation she wished to be transformed, into the good life she desired. The morning air was fresh, and sun rays shone on her face with great intensity. She folded her cardboard and hid it behind one of the squalid houses and went towards the direction of the road. She stood staring at the street as it's form was set. Her eyes watched as some car drivers drove past recklessly, she felt tired of life. Everyday revealed itself with a yearn of freedom, yet the future seemed bleak to her. A sense of gratefulness immediately filled her heart for being alive, because their were days she thought of the burdensome life that is associated with living on the street but the quest for a better life still surged in her. Whenever the question of success came into her mind she felt obligated to do something, but didn't have the opportunity. She stood at a corner letting the sun caress her skin as she watched the cars and people pass.
"If only things were better" she spat after uttering the words from her mouth without the slightest thought of committing an offense.
"Stupid girl, are you crazy?" A woman hissed cleaning her shoe vigorously that was stained with saliva. Edna fell silent in uttermost dismay.
"Nonsense," the woman walked away looking at her spitefully. The intense feeling of fear in her subsided as she heaved feeling relieved that the woman had left. The sun had finally revealed it's full form as it was scorching hot. She thought of apologizing to "Madam Tope" the renowned street kiosk owner who gave her some wares for sale. She had
sincerely apologized to her but "Madam Tope" had bluntly refused as a result of her lateness last week. She had taken no heed to her endless pleas. Edna sat on a stone with her eyes closed.
"Hey," She turned and looked around to see who called her and found out it was her friend Lovelyn who was a full fleshed feminine gender from the Niger delta region. Her dark skin shone in the heat of the afternoon, expressing the beauty of the African race. A flash of her beautiful smile formed, on her face as beads of sweat rolled down over her forehead with a show of vibrancy.
"Why do you look unhappy." Lovelyn beckoned to her as she listened. Her eyes looking searchingly at Edna's face as she spoke.
"Nothing," She replied.
Lovelyn squeezed her hand sympathetically, luckily Lovelyn had been her friend all these years and has always stood by her. She felt relieved which made her draw strength from within to push through the hard walls of life. The thought of the days when they had to team up together to avoid being beaten up by other girls which were their peer group crept through her mind. They will fearlessly talk to the other girls to avoid any act of bullying. And the great thing about her was her eagerness to always be strong and ready to overcome life unending obstacles.
"Why do you look like one who has lost her sense of direction?" Lovelyn looked at her again and asked.
"Pardon me for my silence. How are you doing?" She asked.
"I am fine," She replied smiling happily. They paused for a while then Lovelyn spoke in a low tone.
"I heard about the armed robbery incident. Are you aware of it?"
"Armed robbers um..... no," her voice slowly died off, as she wore a look on her face feigning ignorance about the incident.
"So what happened," Edna asked as she wore a look on her face like one who was intrigued.
Lovelyn told her about the incident of the robbery. She emphatically expressed herself by throwing her two hands in the air, descriptively explaining like one who was present when the incident had occurred.
"Hm, what a world," The world is finally turning into something else," her speech ended leaving Edna to marvel at how news fly like fire flies
extracting the truth from it. This was so because the story Lovelyn had just narrated to her were half-truths embellished with a different notion. She took pleasure in listening to Lovelyn's own version of the story. Her jovial personality always fused in making light of the matter. Sometimes the way her hand went into the air descriptively when telling her stories were amusing. Edna thought she would make a good actress if a role was given to her but she had little education to pursue such a course of life. They laughed heartily after Lovelyn finished up the story with a joke.
"You are an amazing story teller," Edna said as a smile caught across her face.
"Thank you, and you are such a good listener."
They smiled at each other heartily and Lovelyn stretched forth her hand and squeezed it as they smiled at each other. She stood up from were they sat and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Let me go and sell my wares before the sun goes down."
They hugged each other as Edna teased, which made her laugh as they bade each other farewell. She walked away and Edna watched as her figure disappeared into vast space. She felt gladdened for spending some time with her. Hawkers ran to and fro holding out their provisions for sale with the words of 'Get your sachet water' or 'Get your cold drinks and fried plantain chips.' As they sold in the public buyers purchased what they wanted. Some cyclists who drove their motorcycles at the corner of the road splashed mud water on the pedestrians, who in return rained abuses why some cab drivers drove hurriedly with smoke puffing outside from their car bonnets saying to the cars in front of them 'move fast.' Only God knew their destination because the rate at which they drove in a haphazard manner was alarming. Edna went to one of the hawkers and bought a sachet of water to satisfy her thirst. A car speedily hit her causing her to fall down heavily. Her eyes spun as her head played different tunes bringing back memories of her childhood in mind. She laid down on the road helplessly trying to recuperate but could not, since she could only hear the faint sounds of cars and people. Cold shivers ran through her skin as the feeling of numbness crept through her. Mr Coker came down abruptly from his car and was astonished at what he had done and it felt like a dream to him.
"Let's take her to the hospital," his wife said feeling frightened as some on lookers roared raining abuses on Mr Coker while some looked at Edna pitifully as she looked lifeless. A surge of fear filled Mr Coker as some group of men carried her to the back seat of the car. The car sped off leaving passers-by as they shook their heads in pity.
It's a simple question, that requires a simple answer." the hefty guy with a thick beard and fierce looking face spoke. The bartender looked at the man with a bold face and was mute for sometime before he spoke."Am sorry I will endeavour that everything goes smoothly next time.""The boss has not been happy about the recent incident that happened.""Do well, to make sure that this goes well." The man replied and walked out of the bar as some group of men followed behind. Dele walked in looking smartly dressed, with a blue shirt and a black pair of trouser. He greeted the bartender who instructed him to go behind the bar and he immediately did so as the bartender walked through a path that led to a room he couldn't see clearly. He came out after some minutes later and ordered him to serve a drink, to a man who sat at a corner inside the bar.He took the bottle of beer served in a tray and walked past some people. All that Edna knew about Mr Coker was his complacent behaviour because she had observed him for sometime now and the rift that grew between him and his wife as the day passed by. On Tuesday they had been an argument between the both of them which had led Mr Coker to the choice of coming back home late at the middle of the night as he reeked of alcohol. It came as a shock to Edna when the quarrels increased and the cause of it was yet unknown to her but got her thinking.Mrs Coker had left early that morning to the office to get some of the papers given to her by the secretary, the previous day to review. Much later in the day her boss had called upon her to be present in his office. On getting to his office she felt perturbed because the secretary and other members of the company had been informed about the retrenchment of some workers. She walked into his office feeling frightened a bit, as she sat down on the sofa chair. He handed a later over to her that was enc
For sometime now, she felt safe and had obediently worked for them but things had turned around so soon as she became a part of them, but Mrs Coker had let her stay with them despite the circumstances surrounding their lives. Having lost her job, she decided to go sell some wares at the street market down the road but already she had made some contacts with people to notify her when a vacancy for a job is on. She also dropped some application letters in some of the companies that had vacancy. The day was a sunny one with the sun emitting it's scorching rays to the earth, they both stood as they called in a low tone for people to purchase their wares. A man dressed in a red shirt came to purchase what she sold. From a distance, Edna saw little children playing with a carton made toy as they sang and giggle at each other, suddenly one of the children in the midst of them began to cry because he had not made any toy from his carton. The other children left him to his predicament
It was about seven am in the morning Mr Coker woke up like every other working day, he got himself dressed for work and left immediately without having breakfast. Mrs Coker woke up from her sleep as the droplets of rain that fell in torrents last night made the morning air breezy and cold, it was indeed a wet night. She got up from the bed clumsily and looked at the wall clock placed in the middle of the room adjacent to their bed. It was seven thirty in the morning, she grouched still feeling sleepy. She laid back again in bed and watched as two black birds hopping on the window sang beautifully. Her senses felt numb accompanied by a feeling of tiredness as they was a need to rest. Immediately she recalled that a presentation had to be given in the office, and it needed to be attended to quickly. Getting up from her bed she went into the bathroom and had her bath. Instructions was passed by her to everyone that was part of the household. The day was young, until about one o,
