chapter 8

Author: Wasabi

Flashes of shinning knives were pointed to her which was the end. She woke up with a scream and the drip connected to her body, pierced through her skin thereby causing a sharp pain which sent her screaming loudly as she woke up from a deep sleep. A nurse hurriedly came to the ward on hearing the scream as she attended to her.

"Calm down, the soothing voice of a nurse said."

She turned to look at the decently dressed nurse in her white gown. The ward she was in resembled a large room which was occupied, by other patients who were afflicted with different ailments. A young girl who was about the same age with her was connected to a drip with a band on her head, Edna wasn't sure of were she was yet but the smell of medicines and nurses with white uniforms brought her to the consciousness of her vicinity as she lay still on the bed. She shook her head sideways as she watched other nurses give treatment to patients in the ward. The events of the other day became blur in her memory as sharp pains ran through her head. She pondered on how long she had laid on the bed, slowly the aching pain in her made her lie back softly on the pillow feeling it's tender texture. Shortly after the nurse left, a tall good-looking doctor came into the ward walking briskly.

"Good Morning, how are you feeling?"

Her heart felt calm as she looked at the doctor, her throat instantly felt dry as she struggled to speak to the doctor but couldn't. After an effortless try her she laid still as the doctor took a keen look at her and ran his analysis.

"What happened to me." She spoke finally as the words from her mouth came out in a low tone as it slowly died off.

"Do you recall anything." He asked.

"No, she replied as the doctor ran some more analysis, when he was done with his assessment he ordered one of the nurses to change her drip.

Mrs Coker walked into the hospital in the afternoon looking happy, the doctor had called earlier that day to inform her that Edna was awake which was good news to her. For several weeks, they had been waiting for are to wake up after the accident occurred. She had been troubled ever since the accident happened and a feeling of excitement raised in her as she walked to were visitors sat. When it got to her turn, the receptionist directed her to the hall passage where the doctor's office was located. Walking along passageway her heart felt thrilled with joy. Mrs Coker walked into the office of the doctor and sat on a chair that was placed close to his table. His office was properly organized as a set of files preoccupied the edge of  his table, their was an air conditioner which ventilated air into the room. Dr Anderson looked up at her after he had properly organized some set of files.

"Good day doctor Anderson," She greeted in a sweet polite manner. He gently drew his chair closer to his table and replied her heart warming greeting with a smile revealing his perfectly arranged set of teeth. After exchanging pleasantries she placed her hand on the table and asked:

"How is she doing?"

"She is responding to medical treatments properly, except that she still feels week, which is expected considering that she lost some amount of blood he paused then continued:

"But her strength will be regained with proper medical treatments." He replied as his voice sounded reassuringly.

Mrs Coker requested to see her, and he called a nurse who directed her to a ward were Edna was admitted. The ward was bright as sun rays shone in the room, she walked cautiously as the sound of her stiletto heels filled the ward, the nurse left the ward

after discussing with her on how Edna had been faring discussing. Mrs Coker contemplated on whether or not to leave since Edna was asleep, she turned to look at other patients in the ward.

Edna opened her eyes to see a woman who stood in front of her and wondered who she was.

"I am Mrs Coker." She spoke as she came close to her bed.

"I am deeply sorry, my husband is the one responsible for your distress.

She gracefully apologized and moved close to her, Edna glanced at her and gave a quick nod that signified she accepted her apology.

"I have spoken with the doctor and he said you will be fine, but it bothers me that you have not had a visitor from your relatives."

"I don't have a relative staying with me here." Mr Coker felt surprised at her reply.

"I have been homeless for sometime now," Mrs Coker gave her a startled look again. Edna understood the look written on her face and sadly began her story. My mother gave birth to me and lost her life during the process. After the death of my mother her friend contacted my grandmother and then took me to my family, when

the story of my mother's death reached them, they felt distraught and ashamed of the disgrace my mother had laid upon them. They requested that the father of the child who was the son of the people whom my mother worked for, take responsibility for the child but my proclaimed father rejected me. On a cool Saturday morning when I became a young teenager, I was sent to the city and was taken care of by Modupe whom I worked for at a certain period of time. She owned a bar shop back home were I reside, but I realized her involvement in a gang which almost brought me to  doom. I was a sex worker to her at a time and when I felt I could cater for myself I left. In her body she felt calm leaving Mrs Coker to ponder about the story.

Mrs Coker woke up from her sleep as the droplets of rain that fell in torrents last night made the morning air breezy and cold, it was indeed a wet night. She got up from the bed clumsily and looked at the wall clock placed in the middle of the room adjacent to their bed. It was seven thirty in the morning, she grouched still feeling sleepy. She laid back again in bed and watched as two black birds hopping on the window sang beautifully. Her senses felt numb accompanied by a feeling of tiredness as they was a need to rest.
