Chapter 4

Author: Mu Muyu
Keeping her head down, Irene walked up to her Gladstone bag.

She didn't forget her responsibility as a doctor as she said, "You shouldn't let your stitches come in contact with water. Apply antiseptic once per day, and try to wear loose clothes that don't brush against the stitches."

Putting down several small packs, she added, "These are pills that are to be taken orally, and this is the antiseptic."

"Okay," Isaac replied indifferently without turning around.

Irene had nothing else to say in return, so she left with her bag.

It was almost 11 when she arrived at the hospital in a taxi. She had a simple meal at the cafeteria but was summoned to the hospital director's office once she returned to the duty room.

His expression was solemn as if there was something he was hesitant to say, but eventually, he said, "I'm going to let Whitney take the internship at the Second Militarized Zone."

Irene was stunned, but she didn't give up immediately. "Didn't you agree before that I would be the one going?"

"Well, you know that the state-of-the-art equipment we have in the hospital was donated by Light Group, don't you? Isaac told me to give the spot to Whitney, so I was left with no choice."

Isaac's name left Irene a little nervous. While his family and hers acknowledged that she was his wife, but they had never met. She had only seen him in magazines or on TV.

However, the thought of Whitney and Isaac being together shocked Irene.

"Is that so?" Irene asked calmly, but she was actually a little taken aback.

"Yes, but don't worry. We know about your professionalism and ability," said the hospital director. He favored Irene the most out of her batch of young doctors.

Lowering her gaze, Irene murmured, "I understand."

Irene was Isaac’s wife, but this marriage was forced upon them. She meant nothing to him and he wouldn’t care about her either.

As such, she understood perfectly that there was no salvaging the situation.

She then said, "I have two surgeries in the afternoon, so I shall get going."

The hospital director sighed. "Of course. Go ahead."

-

Irene was focused all her attention on the two surgeries in the afternoon. She was exhausted after the surgeries were done.

After washing her hands and taking off her blue scrubs, Irene gave herself a small break. That was when Whitney entered the room.

"Dr. Spencer," she said with a smile. "Let me treat you to a meal."

"Sorry, but I have plans tonight," said Irene, turning down Whitney’s offer.

The two of them were colleagues and nothing more.

They had never been close, even though they were students from the same university and of the same year.

However, Whitney had always been domineering and a show-off. She had always loved to compete with others.

Irene, on the other hand, kept to her books.

They had had completely different personalities, let alone being best friends.

"I see," said Whitney, looking like she was in a dilemma. "There's actually something I wanted to tell you."

Irene got up and hung her clothes and didn’t even look at Whitney. "Alright then, just tell me now."

For some reason, she felt even more eager to keep her distance from Whitney after learning that she and Isaac were connected.

"You must have heard, right? I'm really sorry. I didn't know that the director of the hospital would..."

"It's fine," said Irene, cutting her short.

Whitney lowered her gaze for a moment. She then rolled her eyes. "Also, could you not tell anyone that I wasn't actually in the hospital last night I don't want any trouble before my internship."

It was a weird reason, but Irene was used to such eccentricity from Whitney. "Sure, I won't. tell anyone."

After all, it was common to take a shift for a colleague out of the blue, and everyone inevitably had emergencies.

-

Outside the hospital, the sky was getting dark, and the streetlights were lit.

A luxury MPV was waiting outside the hospital.

Zachary was inside, bragging. "My friend’s a good doctor, isn’t she?"

Isaac was loafing in the backseat, remembering how composed and nimble the woman tended to his wounds in the afternoon.

He had to admit that she was very skilled.

"Miss Cox," Stan suddenly said in the front row.

Isaac rolled down his window as Whitney walked toward their MPV. Zachary cocked his brow when he saw her. "Whitney Cox?"

"You know her?" asked Stan.

Zachary nodded. "She went to the same school as I did."

Isaac raised his head. His eyes seemed to be glowing.

She had saved him last night and then tended to his injuries today as well.

‘She...’

Even Stan was murmuring in awe. "Is this Cupid's arrangement?"

Zachary frowned in response. "What are you talking about?"

"Mr. Jefferson."

That was when Whitney reached them, cutting their conversation short.

“Mom, Dad, you have to help me, or I'll definitely end up in prison!” Ricky Spencer was crying out even as he tugged on Samantha's hand.Lionel glared at his incorrigible son. “What have you done this time?” he growled. It was certainly not Ricky's first offense. “I... I was just trying to practice my driving ahead of my driver's test. Irene's SUV was just sitting there and no one's using it, so I drove it around, and then I got caught in an accident...”“What?”Lionel almost died from a heart attack. “Just days ago, you almost blinded someone with a skewer, and I had to spend so much on damages and apologize to finally resolve it! Now, you're telling me you caused an accident? And without a license! You honestly don't appreciate being alive, do you?”“Calm down, Lionel. Ricky's your only son, and he hasn't completed his studies yet! You have to help him. He can't go to prison. Would he have a future if he does? The SUV is Irene's, so just say that it was her...”“Dream on, Sa

Irene decided that she would be out of line if she kept her place as Mrs. Jefferson.Nearby, the leaves on a tree were rustling from the touch of a slightly chill breeze. It was the early days of autumn, and the sun was much milder.Tightening her clothes, she hurried along, having planned to cook dinner for Isaac tonight before asking for a divorce. That was when a car suddenly screeched to a halt, blocking her path while several men quickly alighted. Without saying a word, one of them pulled a black sack over her head while another clasped a hand over her mouth, dragging her into the car before speeding off.Irene was immobile and completely under their control. There was no telling how long had passed when she was finally dragged out of the car.Although the black sack still kept her blind, no one was keeping her from talking.“Who are you people? Why did you kidnap me?”“778VQ. That's your car, isn't it?”“Yes,” replied Irene. Her mother had spent all her savings to buy h

When Isaac woke up, his nostrils were stung by the pungent scent of medicine. As he slowly sat up, his secretary came by to help. “Mr. Jefferson.”Isaac waved her off. “I'm fine,” he said. He took a moment to compose herself before asking, “How's Stan?”“He's unconscious, but the doctor already operated on him, so his life isn't in danger,” the secretary replied. “The doctor has also advised you to rest since you had a minor concussion. Why don't you rest a little?”Isaac remembered the blood on Whitney's legs just then. Pursing his lips in silence for a while, he eventually ended up asking, “How's Whitney?”“The doctor said that she had a miscarriage. She's fine otherwise apart from minor lacerations. She woke up when I arrived. She's in the next ward.”After hesitating for a moment, the secretary asked, “Should I call for her?”Isaac raised a hand to stop her.He was feeling a mixed of emotions. Despite his disgust toward Whitney, and his reluctance to let her be the mothe

Isaac stared at Whitney in silence, and she gradually felt the creeps.Guilt was gnawing on her. After all, she had never been pregnant!Nonetheless, he said slowly after a while, “If there really is a child in your belly, I want it.”Whitney was jubilant. She would be laughing out loud if she wasn't sitting in front of Isaac, but there was no hiding the joy and excitement on her face.Amidst all the thrill, she asked, “Then, are you going to marry me?”Isaac's answer was short and flat. One might even say cold. “No.”Those words left Whitney's smile stiffening. “What? Why?”“It's a simple issue. I just want the child,” Isaac said flatly with the last ounce of his patience.Whitney started to lose her composure right then. “Well, where are you taking me?”“To the hospital,” Stan answered from the driver's seat, and turned to glance at her for a moment. “You'll give birth to that child, but you won't be the mother.”This time, Whitney was scared witless. “Why the hospital?

Zachary nodded. Irene stiffened as if she had a bucket of ice water poured on her, dousing her from head to toe.'Isaac told me that he didn't like Whitney, but if that really was the case, why would she be pregnant?' wondered Irene.Noticing the terrible look on Irene's face, Zachary asked in concern, “Are you alright, Irene?”Irene came to her senses and quickly shook her head. “I'm fine.”She felt a sense of loss to hear that Whitney was pregnant, but she was soon relieved. It didn't matter to her whom Isaac loved, as she had no reason to get upset about that.“No, you're not,” Zachary said suspiciously, because she was kind of overreacting. “Did you fall for Isaac?”Irene looked up and met Zachary's gaze. “Did I?”He nodded. “Yes, you did. ““Actually, I'm reacting like this because I'm worried, not because of him,” she said, walking over to sit on a bench. “I know my place. I won't think of him that way.”At the same time, she stroked her belly.Surely there were not

Over the years, Irene’s heart often ached, but she had also learned to let go.Changing the subject, she asked, “Weren't you asking to be discharged, Mom?”Sheryl nodded. “Yes. I'm much better. I'm ready to leave after such a long stay.”Irene didn't agree to it, however, and instead spoke to her attending physician. He told her that while Sheryl could be discharged, she should ensure that she had sufficient rest and keep to her checkup schedules. Still, Irene didn't tell Sheryl that, but instead said, “You should wait a couple days, Mom.”After all, Sheryl needed a place to live after she was discharged. After Sheryl nodded in agreement, Irene hesitated for a moment before asking her opinion, “Mom, do you want to divorce Lionel?”“I will,” replied Sheryl.Irene pursed her lips. She had wanted her mother to divorce Lionel for years, but it never happened. Moreover, Sheryl was saying she would divorce Lionel—and not that she wanted to.And Irene respected her decision. Afte
