JANE'S POV
This lagos traffic. Lord help us.
I left my house by six o'clock to beat this traffic yet I'm still within my vicinity.Wait. The traffic is moving already. The god damn car in front of me is not moving. I press my car horn a million times and he starts moving. He shoots me a fuck you. I couldn't care less about that,I'm fucking late to class. I should have gone back to the hostel yesterday being Sunday, but Miss Jones wanted to have dinner with me. I glance at the time on my watch. Eight o'clock. I'll skip class today.
"Move it!!" I yell at the blue Toyota camry in front of me .
My phone starts ringing and I pick it without glancing at the caller id.
"Babe. " The voice calls and I smile. This is the voice that brings sunshine to my life. The voice that never cease to make me happy .
"George. How are you doing? "I ask him.
"Good. Where are you?" He asks.
"I'm almost at school . The traffic is reducing . In about twenty minutes I'll be there. "I tell him.
"Ok. Then. Be fast. I love you." He says and hangs up.
That is our boring relationship, but I like it like that.
Just as I drive into the university compound. I receive another call. I park my car in front of my hostel and pick up the ringing phone. It was an unknown number.
"Hello?" I say into the phone.
"Jane?" The person at the other end calls my name. The voice sounds so familiar, very familiar and I can't place it.
"It's Sam." The person introduces and I gasp in shock. I don't know why,but my heart starts breathing really fast and I have to hold my chest.
"Samantha Jones? "I ask.
"Yes." She says and I can't believe it. The voice sounds so sad and full of pain unlike the girl that was always happy,laughing and winking at people. I know it's my fault.
"I called to apologise to you. I put you through a hard time. I'm sorry I pushed you off the roof on your graduation ceremony. I was really selfish. I shouldn't have done that. You deserve love . I pushed you because I saw the love in both your eyes. I was angry that George had never looked at me like that. No boy had ever looked at me like that and it really got me annoyed. I'm sorry." She says and I'm speechless for a while.
"Part of it was my fault . He was your boyfriend and I took him away from you. I'm sorry also." I tell her.
"No problem. How are you doing ? How is university going? "She asks.
"It's great. I'm studying psychology. In two years I'll graduate. "I explain. "What of you? What are you studying? "I ask her.
"I'm repeating my last year of high school ." She says.
"Oh. How is New York? "I ask her and there is silence.
"Sam? Are you still there?" I call.
"Yeah. How is my mom?" She asks.
"Good. Why do ask. Don't you keep in touch? "I ask and immediately I regret asking that question.
"No. We don't. Hope she is doing fine?" She asks and my heart aches for this attention starved girl. I can't imagine not growing up without my parents. I have them with me even Miss Jones.
"Yes. Sure. When are you coming back? "I ask her.
"I don't know honestly." She answers and there is silence for a while.
"Ok. Bye. Catch you up later. "She says and hangs up.
I can't believe that. She called back to apologise. She sounds weak,very fed up of life. The enthusiasm that was always in her voice was gone . She wasn't happy. She sounded so sad.
I was supposed to be her best friend. She trusted me even though she knew I was only following her around to be labelled Samantha Jones best friend.
I spent two months in the hospital. After I came out people gave me a hard time. Even Mariam that hated Sam more than anything was so angry with me.
I didn't have any friends apart from George, Sam's mother who took it upon herself to care for me through out my life. I wish I treated Sam like a true friend at least.
I sigh and go into my hostel for a long nap.
