The large room was dark except for a lamp that shone across a long desk. Four men sat around the table. Watching the monitor, they smiled at each other. Two of the men were well dressed, ready for business and the other two, were in military fatigues. The monitor constantly flickered, displaying a series of numbers and dates that ran across the screen, each line referring to coordinates and location in time. To the untrained eye, it looked like a jumble of numbers, yet to the trained eye, it listed the current time stream.

Papers were scattered across the desk and notes were written down. You could hear the hum of the computers in the room and the low drone of the traffic outside. The monitor then made several beeps and the numbers changed.

‘What the hell is going on?’ said Todd, who was dressed in a sharp suit. ‘This was supposed to be easy.’

Todd Peters was an angry man. He often allowed his rage to take over and the slightest thing could make him cross. It was like a fire burning inside him and sometimes he could not contain it. He remembered to breathe. Keep calm.

The second man got up and walked over to the screen. He was also well dressed, his round shape hugged the shirt he wore and his sandy hair hung from his head, unkept and wavy. His speech did not match the clothes he wore. He sounded rough and coarse but was calmer than Todd.

‘It’s not always easy, you see. Sometimes things don’t go to plan.’

‘But it has been over a year. Darcy should be prefect. You promised me results and all I see is her fighting back and doing things her own way.’

Breathe, he had to remember to breathe.

‘Look at the screen. She did what we told her. She still thinks it was her idea.’ His wording was irregular.

Todd walked away from the desk looking frustrated. He glanced at the monitor and walked back.

‘It’s not clean,’ he said holding back his rage. ‘Can you not see how her mind is struggling with the suggestions we gave her? I’m worried that she will break or worse, work out what we have done.’

'Impossible,’ interrupted Pete. ‘I gave her the correct dose and the exact implant the others got. She stopped John Lennon being killed. She didn’t die like the others, she’s ready.’

‘I don’t like it. She needs a reset.’ Todd turned to look at the other two men. ‘Jones. Remind me why she didn’t receive a reset today?’

His question was blunt. It was obvious he could erupt at any moment. Jones look embarrassed and started shifting in his seat. He said nothing. Just stared at Todd, like a small child being told off by a parent. Williams stood up and took control of the situation.

‘She escaped Sir. It was an error on our part.’

‘You’re damn right it was an error. One that I will not tolerate. Do you know how much we have invested in her?’

   ‘No Sir.’

‘More than you earn in a year. Control wants results and they are unhappy. They even mentioned wiping you too idiots. I might let them do it.’ He smiled, allowing himself to release a little bit of the fire.

‘We will get her and make this right.’

 ‘No more second chances.’

Williams sat down and grumbled something to Jones who was sitting perfectly still. Todd went back to Pete and the two men sat down at the table.

‘You finished?’ said Pete sarcastically. Todd looked at him with daggers. He just sighed instead, ignoring his tone, and remembering to breathe.

  ‘What’s the plan, Pete?’

Pete pulled a file from the desk. It was a brown folder with the words control stamped in red on the front. He opened it and looked at the paper.

‘So, you wanna reset her?’ questioned Pete, with his irregular wording.

‘I do. She’s a liability and could mess up the program.’

‘But we will have to start again. It’s taken us a year to get this far. Think what we have done. Gently putting suggestions into her head, dropping comments around her, making sure she is convinced this was her idea. Nothing can be tied back to us.’ Pete held up the paper. ‘Here’s the plan,’ he finished, waving it in front of Todd.

The computer beeped, breaking the tension. Everyone looked up as a map appeared on the screen and zoomed directly into a street of New York. At the center was a small dot, moving slowly across the screen.

‘She’s on the move,’ said Todd.

‘Where’s she going?’ asked Jones, finally getting the courage to speak.

Pete pulled out the keyboard and tapped a few keys. The map on the screen spun round, zoomed out and plotted a red line. It was heading straight to the bank.

‘Looks like she is getting the device back,’ said Pete.

Todd jumped up from his chair. ‘That’s great news. Forget the reset. We can use this to our advantage.’ He turned to Pete. ‘Can you set the new coordinates into her device?’  Pete nodded. ‘My guess is she wants to fix the mess she’s made,’ finished Todd.

‘Do you want us to follow her?’ asked Williams.

‘Keep your distance until you receive orders.’

Jones and Williams nodded, picked up their things and left the room, leaving the two men to carry out the plan.

‘Ok, Pete. Let’s do this.’ There was now excitement in Todd’s voice. He picked up the papers on the desk and flicked through them.

‘Let’s set the suggestion,’ interrupted Pete.

‘Good idea. But we will also need some visual signal to encourage her brain. She is fighting back. We can’t have her messing this up.’

For this to work, Darcy would need the suggestion sent to her brain. The implant stuck within her skull acted as a receiver, sending, and receiving instructions from control. But she was fighting back. The idea was to set up an impression fooling her brain into believing it was her own thoughts, but Darcy’s sub-conscious knew the thought was false and tried to reject it. The headaches she got was her brain fighting back and it could overload the implant, allowing her to realize that everything was set up. It was a risk they would have to take.

Darcy was skilled at covert operations, but also, she had a unique brain unlike anyone before. Previous tests subjects had all died within months of the experiment, rejecting the implant and they overloaded. Control had been looking for answers and eventually, Todd and Pete figured out the problem. The two men had assured Control they had discovered a perfect candidate.

While a reset would stabilize the implant, it would also wipe the year of work to set this up. Since Darcy had been processed by Control, Todd and Pete had spent the year making subtle suggestions, putting ideas into Darcy’s mind, so that when the Device was active, she would believe she had stolen it to change history. It was all part of the plan. Jones and Williams had been sent as part of the illusion. Chase Darcy, convincing her that she was a wanted fugitive.

Todd and Pete had also followed Darcy to 1980, they needed to track her progress. Control wanted a test run before carrying out the plan. Her love for the 1960’s was a perfect cover, which made saving John Lennon an easy test. If Darcy could carry it out, believing it was all her idea, then they could move on to the real plan. The only problem was Darcy. Her unique brain was stronger than anticipated and she might break through the implant. They needed to get her on the train. That was the next part of the plan.

Todd pulled a small futuristic radio and had a brief conversation with Williams. He hung up and carried on shuffling through the papers. Pete had been tapping away on the keyboard, setting up the new coordinates for the device and setting up the suggestion.

  ‘You ready Pete?’ asked Todd.

‘Ready,’ replied Pete and clicked his fingers.

Pete tapped away, sliding his chubby fingers across the keyboard. He might be a simple man, but he was an expert with the computer and had helped Control set up this system. With the power to make someone carry out tasks, without their knowledge, the world could be changed and whoever had that power, would rule. Pete believed that and so did Todd. Their motto was for the greater good.

Todd’s radio buzzed. ‘Jones?’ he asked.

‘Boss. We’re on route to the bank. How should we proceed.

  ‘Make sure she gets there.’

  ‘Roger.’

He turned to Pete and lay the paper in front of him. He placed his finger on the sheet, pointing to a specific section. Pete nodded in agreement.

‘Do it,’ said Todd. ‘Get her on that train.’

Pete hit the return key on the keyboard. The monitor flicked and a stream of numbers scrolled across the screen. The colour of the text changed from yellow to red, disappeared from the screen and a steady stream of yellow text reappeared.

‘It’s done,’ said Pete. Todd smiled and walked away from the console. The fire was gone.

*Juliet*Yawning quietly, I snuggle under the covers against Sam’s broad warm back a few minutes longer, watching with disappointment as the creeping sunrise brightens our bedroom. The mere fact that he’s still asleep after dawn and after me, tells me more than I know he wants about how he felt going to bed last night. It was sign enough he blocked the stairs to keep Ajax upstairs with us, but when he went back down for his second pistol he usually keeps downstairs, it was a sure tell he was considerably worried. We'll both be chasing a nap later this afternoon.Catching the rancid musky odor was enough to relax me. I’m confident at this point it was some sort of stray animal that made its way along the house while we were at Stew and Alice’s to watch the Christmas specials, and I feel bad that Sam didn’t rest well over something as common out here as that.
