Chapter 26

Aster: third person's point of view.

-

A week passed.

Seven days. Megan stopped answering his calls. Stopped opening the door despite his pleas and apologies for that night. Heck, she doesn't go out anymore like she would usually do, and it's scaring him.

Ethan found him knocking on her door yesterday, and demanded to meet up for a chat. As much as he doesn't want to, he had no choice but to oblige. He needs closure, after all.

So here he was, looking like a lost puppy sitting outside the bakery they would always go to, with a freshly baked croissant warming his cold, shaking hands.

"Let's not beat around the bush, tell me why my sister is like that."

He gulped. "Like what-"

"Sullen. Lifeless."

"Oh." I messed up. Bigtime. "Is she eating her meals on time?"

"No," Ethan stopped to fix the watch on his wrist. "Whose fault do you think is that?"

He stayed silent, failing to find the right words to say. He looked down and avoided the older man's piercing gaze, praying to nothing in particular.

"Look, if you're just going to play with her, yada yada, you can leave. I found out about your past with Bliss and I don't know how I should feel about that. You left her, and now you're changing targets?"

He sighed, placing his food down and looking back at Ethan. "Listen, I don't know why I'm like this either, but I swear, it is never my intention to hurt them. I'm not like that. I have morals and principles which I strongly hold on to, and I can't imagine myself being the kind of person you think I am."

"Then tell me why you ran away, but not from my sister. Enlighten me."

"I'm afraid of falling in love," he admitted.

Ethan looked at him in confusion, their surroundings now forgotten. "I beg your pardon? That makes absolutely no sense."

"I know, and I'm sorry."

"But if you were to choose, who would you go to?"

The sudden question caught him off guard. He stopped playing with his fingers and looked away, letting the words sink in. In the back of his mind, he has a feeling of what he will answer but he's afraid of what the outcome would be.

"Megan or Xyrill Bliss?" The older spoke again.

"I..." he pinched the bridge of his nose with his forefinger and thumb, contemplating and hesitating. He knew this question would come to the surface, but he wasn't expecting it so soon. It's too soon, and he's still confused.

"Don't keep me waiting, Santos." His body shivered at the tone of Ethan's voice.

Damn it.

"Choose wisely, please." The older stood up, preparing to leave him in his thoughts. He sighed and patted his shoulder before walking away. "Don't act rashly, or I won't think twice and just send you back to the Philippines myself."

-----

It took an unhealthy amount of time and willpower to open his contacts and dial in Megan's number again. He couldn't stay idle for too long, his mind is getting restless from overthinking, and he's losing his strength with each passing day.

Alas, after a couple of rings and crushed egos, she answered.

"Who is this?"

"I'm sorry." That started their conversation after a long time of silence.

"Aster..."

"I'm really sorry, I didn't know I would hurt you like that. Had I known, I wouldn't have let my feelings take over my system that night."

He heard her heave a short sigh. "There's no need to be sorry for something like that. I have zero rights, I'm your friend so I understand. Do not force yourself on someone if it doesn't feel right."

"I-" He whispered under his shaky breath, "I didn't mean to hurt you, Spencer."

"Don't worry, I'm used to it."

He sighed, cursing at himself. "You are, but it doesn't mean that you're fine."

She laughed. "That's a fact."

"Spencer..."

"If I hear one more apology from you, I swear to the golden apples of Megantopia you won't get some exclusive premium Therapy, Cheeto."

She called me Cheeto again. Aster sighed. I heard that ridiculous endearment again.

"You up for movie night?" He bit his lip, nervous for what her answer would be. "I mean, it's totally okay if you object."

"About that, my family agreed on letting me stay at another state for a while, I'm packing my bags right now." She stopped talking for a second. "I'm leaving tonight."

"What?"

"Hey, what was that gift you wanted again?"

"No, don't you dare change the subject. Why did you agree?" Still not able to move on from her sudden confession, his mind imagined a thousand scenarios again.

"It's my decision, and for my own good, Aster."

"But why? Can't you just stay here? Just stay, let's continue the movie nights, the free meals, everything."

"I'm sorry, let's do it some other time."

"How long?" He paused, taking in the news he heard, despite his disapproval. "How long will it take before you come back?"

"A while, I'm not certain."

He scratched his head in frustration, breathing heavily to control himself. "But, I still can't understand. And about that night..."

"Ah, that. Don't worry, I didn't take it seriously."

He opened his eyes. "What do you mean?"

"I think you were drunk at that time, you smelled like alcohol... don't worry."

"Spencer..."

"As I said, it's totally fine. Don't think about it again-"

"No. Quit saying that favorite lie of yours."

A few seconds of silence dominated the call before she spoke again. "I'm sorry."

"I drank a shot or two, but I'm aware of what I did. I kissed you on my own will." He massaged his temples as an attempt to stop the sudden throbbing. Or was that a response to what he's feeling right now? Even he himself can't fathom where the disturbing pain came from. "I did it on purpose."

"Did you mean it?"

He stayed silent.

"If you kissed me, did you mean it?"

He closed his eyes, with one hand still on his temple as his breathing slowed down. "Would you believe me if I say I do?"

A soft knock on the door welcomed the deafening silence that ensued between the two. Standing up, he excused himself and opened the door, only to reveal the woman who filled his thoughts and dreams for the past week.

"Can I be honest this time?"

He nodded.

"No. I don't believe—"

He held her shoulder and pulled her in for a hug. He felt her arms lay limply on his side as he nuzzled his face on her hair. She didn't hug back when she normally would initiate it first. It's his fault, and good grief, he's aware of the consequences but he can't bring himself to accept.

Nevertheless, he didn't change his stance nor loosened his tight grip on her upper back. "Why?"

"You're in love with Bliss, Aster," She grabbed his arms and pulled him away. Letting out a small smile, she spoke again. "You're scared and confused, and as much as I strongly hate it, this," She pointed at his chest where his heart resides. "This beats for her only."

*Juliet*Yawning quietly, I snuggle under the covers against Sam’s broad warm back a few minutes longer, watching with disappointment as the creeping sunrise brightens our bedroom. The mere fact that he’s still asleep after dawn and after me, tells me more than I know he wants about how he felt going to bed last night. It was sign enough he blocked the stairs to keep Ajax upstairs with us, but when he went back down for his second pistol he usually keeps downstairs, it was a sure tell he was considerably worried. We'll both be chasing a nap later this afternoon.Catching the rancid musky odor was enough to relax me. I’m confident at this point it was some sort of stray animal that made its way along the house while we were at Stew and Alice’s to watch the Christmas specials, and I feel bad that Sam didn’t rest well over something as common out here as that.
