15: my misery chose me.

How does one begin a new journey-

-without really ending the other.

Zachary’s dark brown hair slipped to the sides to form an unattractive bang across his forehead. He looked into the mirror staring at his baggy buttoned up shirt and his khakis.

This had been sort of like his uniform. Huge clothes that somehow showed less of his size and stature and no one blames him for feeling comfortable in those. Kindly not even his mother.

He shook his wristwatch before staring at his wristwatch for more than a second before he sighed, by that time a hand had held his right sleeves, folding it up a little. It was Regina.

“Do you really need to go to school?” Regina asked before Zach turned to the side to look at her, knowing that was the exact opposite of what his mother says. “Yes” He sharply replied. 

“Its the winter formal. I missed half the term and the least i could do is see Amy for the last time” He continued as she let go.

“It’s only because of Amy” She said.

“Mum” Zachary called. ”I’ll be fine. It’s just school. The same devilish school” He added.

The strobing lights at the entrance of the hall way was enough to say the school had put in a little more effort than usual. From the banners to the balloons to the snowy mistletoe.

And someone the most attention was still on Zach.

"I'm hearing voices, again. This time, she's calm and i feel she really knows me. The real me" He went on as Reg shook her head to herself.

Memories flooded back to him of the last time he was on this ground. “She?” Reg asked.

“Her name’s Irene and she’s everything i ever wanted-“ “You need help” His mother had yelled back to him whilst taking a step back.

“I’m not crazy, mum-“

“But you’re falling in love with a voice-“

“She’s real, she’s real mum. She’s real”

And just when he was about to back out at the door due to these overwhelming thoughts and the amount of people that stared at him-

-someone clasped his palms and without even looking back, he could have guessed who.

“Amy” He whispered, letting his back rest on hers as the music started and she hummed along, not bothering to look back to him.

Amy didn’t care. If she was looked at by all of the school, she was there. Always in the moment and that’s why she regretted never standing up for him that day in the crowd.

When he looked at her, hoping for some reassurance that he wasn’t, crazy. And thats why the first she said to him then was not his name, neither was it a response to hers.

It was the one thing he wanted to know. The one thing he deserved to know. “You’re not” She said plainly till he stopped to look back.

“Youre not crazy. She’s real” She nodded.

He had taken her hands at the peak of Doris Day’s dream a little dream of me as they ran under the rhythmic christmas lights and into the little snow that fell.

Katharina had never laughed so wide and truth was he had never too. He felt the press against his bladder as he awaited the rest of what she had to say. She pouted before speaking- “I missed you Zachary, you know that”

“I know but what exactly happened. Where did i go that day?” He couldn’t help asking as they both leaned against the sidewalk railings.

“That day was a month ago, barely though. You left that day with some of your money and almost all of your things. i feared you’d never come back. You left me this though-“ She said as she brings her phone, typing something in.

“You are the only person that still leaves voice mails you know that?” They both chuckled as they tried to listen.

"Amy. If you're listening to this, I've already gone. She is real and I'm going to find her. Katharina" He paused. 

"I'm so glad to have met you, to have loved you but it was sad for me to also realize that i was the wrong person. 

At this point, Regina must have remembered that going to the party was probably the worst idea as ahe began to pack up-

-Or perhaps she had seen something as she turned off the news and hastily zipped up his luggage. 

"It was also a good thing because it was because of you that i opened my eyes to see these emotions and love. You really did help me, so I'm going to help you, too-" "If you really love something, screw letting it go, screw the world if they don't agree. If it isn't perfect because it's not just one thing, you owe it to yourself to be happy-" he had said all the words from the books that Katharine had read to him once, to Amy. 

She swiped her bags off the shelves and handled the keys to the booth, filling it one by one with the huge luggages that one could tell they were never coming back.

"I'm talking about Sally now, just so you know-" By her name, tears had already begun to fall from both her eyes.

“Why don’t go after her like i am because life is too short to not be hap-“ 

Amy had cut it short, maybe because she had sighted Regina from her car and she called unto Zach, showing him his mother.

“Get in the car. We need to go” Regina said before she had reached where he stood.

“What?” He asked as she grabbed his hands.

“No-“ He yelled. Before Amy called. “Zach”

Then she looked to Regina. “One moment please” She requested before she let go and Zach was close enough to look close in her eyes.

“Zach if its true that you went to Zürich, its also true that you killed that man”

Zach released a deep breath before he bashed it into his head, continually till his blood began to splash all around. 

He had shut his eyes at the gruesome sight,

-but he didn't stop hitting him. He couldn't. 

He remembered these memories in scrambles but only soon will it all make sense to him. “You killed a man” She whispered.

“And right now, we might not know what Regina is up to but here isnt safe either because it would’ve take long till they find you”

“They’ve already found her” He grasped her hands immediately as Regina stepped closer.

“I don’t know the rest that happened that night but maybe leaving is your best option” Amy let go off his hands as he backed off.

“Zachary-“ She called for the last time.

“Sally, i called her. She’s good and the city’s good too” She nodded and Zach smiled. “But if you ever make it back-“

“I might be gone Zach”

“Life’s too short-“ She started before a pause. “Come on” She then said to him.

“-to not be happy” He whispered, using his side eyes back at his mother. But deep down, he was scared to shit. His heart thumped as he looked back at Amy who had already turned.

The music dimmed as he entered the car to see his luggages and he hadn’t said a word to his mother. Maybe because all that came to his mind was her echo-

“You killed a man” 

“You killed a man”

“You killed a man”

And he knew, that was the worst.
