chapter 2

Author: A Short Novel
"Ling said that he'll divorce you once we've taken your baby's heart. Aren't you thrilled?"

Miao Xiaobei sneered after hearing those words.

"If you're really all that then, after so many years, why has he still not divorced me yet? A fake will always be a fake. He's just blinded by the lies now. Then again, when it comes to a ruthless scumbag such as Murong Ling, I think you two are perfect for each other."

The moment she had decided to knock herself into the wall, she had already given up on him.

Her heart, which had loved him for years, had been completely crushed to dust.

Miao Wanwan hadn't expected her to say that. Rage boiled within her and the blood rushed to her face.

"Miao Wanwan, do you really think that Ling kept you beside him because he's in love with you? Get real. He just wants to have a good time torturing you. Considering the half-dead state you're in now, Ling will never bother to take another look at you. Just wait and collect your child's body after a couple of days."

She mercilessly threw these venomous words at her and then flounced out of the ward with a pale face.

Miao Xiaobei thought Miao Wanwan was ridiculous and she would never let the both of them succeed with their plan.

Early in the morning, she was inexplicably woken up by a noisy group and pushed directly into the surgical room.

When she saw the familiar faces of the doctors and Murong Ling, she could somewhat guess what was going on.

"Drink it," Murong Ling said curtly, taking a glass of brown sugar water and placing it in front of her.

Miao Xiaobei took a glance at the cup and ignored it, then raised her arm and said tonelessly, "Weren't you going to draw blood from me? Take it then."

She shut her eyes, allowing the doctors to do whatever they wanted with her arm.

Murong Ling was slightly taken aback by her reaction and his brows furrowed.

Looking at her pale and sallow face, he felt his chest inexplicably tighten.

That strange feeling had become stronger, and it now felt as though his heart was going to drop out of his chest anytime. He could not control the sensation.

"Young Master Murong, we can't continue anymore. She has just given birth. If we continue to draw her blood, we'll be drawing the life out of her."

The doctor standing to one side could no longer watch. He immediately stopped what he was doing and advised them to stop the entire procedure.

"My life is worthless anyway. Just do it," said Miao Xiaobei in an eerie monotone.

From the way she was speaking, one could very well be forgiven for thinking that she was having something like a harmless haircut rather than a life-threatening medical procedure. She didn't seem to care about her own life.

After hearing her words, Murong Ling bent over and used his slender fingers to pinch her bony chin. He glared at her face ferociously.

"Seeking death? It won't be that easy, Miao Xiaobei. You can never escape from me. I'll slowly let you have a taste of what you've done to Wanwan."

"Send her back to the ward," he said, releasing his grip on her in disgust.

Miao Xiaobei opened her eyes widely and slightly lifted the corners of her mouth. A hint of coldness flashed through her eyes, but her chest felt painful.

Miao Wanwan was hiding at the corner of the surgical room. She understood Murong Ling too well. It was obvious that he was in love with Miao Xiaobei.

She had vividly seen the hint of pity that had flashed through his eyes just then.

She could not let them be together. She had put in so much effort and plotted all of this for a long time, she could not let it go down the drain.

"Miss Miao, it's time for your medicine." In the morning, a nurse pushed a trundling cart into her ward.

"Ah, thank you." she replied with a smile, taking the medicine given by the nurse and gulping it down with a mouthful of water.

The nurse was slightly surprised by her sudden change in attitude since yesterday.

Moreover, she had heard the nurse on duty mentioning something about the incident that had happened last night.

She thought that if Miao Xiaobei's attitude remained the same as yesterday when it had been time for medicine, she would probably console her.

Who knew that Miao Xiaobei's smile would instead be making her feel flustered?

After swallowing the medicine, Miao Xiaobei saw the dazed look on the nurse's face, so she tilted her head curiously and asked, "What's wrong?"

The nurse shook her head vehemently and said, "Nothing, nothing. It's just that you still need to take your medicine at noon and in the afternoon. The timings are written there. Do remember to take them on time."

She stammered as she spoke, then took the medicine from the cart and placed it on the table.

"Puff... "

Miao Xiaobei couldn't help but chuckle as she listened to the nurse. The nurse reminded her of how she had been when she had first started her internship in the hospital, when she'd been just as nervous and unsure.

Every time when she was nervous, her eyes would wander and she would nervously grab onto anything she saw. She would even stammer over her words.

The nurse was suddenly stunned and stared at her with a blank face.

Miao Xiaobei stopped her chuckling and leaned back onto the headboard as she said, "I was like you when I first started my internship. Every time, I would follow the professor to perform routine ward rounds. The professor would ask me about the patients' conditions and I would be like how you're behaving now. Looking at you reminds me of my younger days."

After hearing this, the nurse subconsciously replied, "You are still very young now. Wait... you're a doctor?"

She nodded.

"Then why are you...?"

The nurse actually wanted to ask, "Since you're a doctor, why didn't you look after yourself?"

But she suddenly remembered what her colleagues had told her this morning and her mouth instantly clamped shut.

Miao Xiaobei looked at her with wide eyes and asked, "Do you know something? Is there something wrong with me?"

"Nothing," the nurse responded and shook her head.

"You have to understand that many things in this world are beyond your control, just like how I..."

Suddenly, Miao Xiaobei grabbed the nurse's hand as if she had thought of something.

"Can you do me a favor?"

"Murong Ling, guess you can't wait to send me to prison, huh? I never knew you to be so cruel. I love you so much, and you know that I have cancer, yet you're still sending me to that gloomy hellhole. I'm devastated."Miao Wanwan looked up at the sky as she spoke, a single tear falling from the corner of her eye.Miao Xiaobei paid absolutely no attention to her words. Her entire being was focused on the sleeping child wrapped in her arms. She was so afraid that Miao Wanwan would fall off the cliff accidentally if she was startled or shifted her weight a little."Miao Xiaobei, I hate you so much, do you know that? Why you are better than me at everything? Even your luck is better! Why don't I have anything? My entire life, I've had to struggle just for a few scraps of happiness, but you snatched everything away. How can I not hate you?" she wailed.Murong Ling signaled for Miao Xiaobei to keep talking to her, then he silently edged towards the space behind her."Do you know how muc

Miao Xiaobei agreed and followed Li Xin into the cafe, pulling along her son by his little hand. However, as soon as Miao Xiaobei sat down, Li Xin grabbed her bag and legged it out of the door.Naturally, without sparing a moment to think, she gave chase.By the time she had gotten back her bag and returned to the shop, she found to her horror that her precious son was gone. She searched the entire milk tea shop but he seemed to have just vanished into thin air.She had even searched the surrounding area, but to no avail. She returned to the milk tea shop and requested the CCTV footage. Unfortunately, their seats just so happened to be in a blind spot and it had not been caught on the footage.Luckily, there was a CCTV camera at the entrance of the store. When she saw that it was Miao Wanwan who had taken away her son, all of the color instantly drained from her face."Isn't she supposed to be in Murong Ling's prison? Why was she here?"Miao Bei took out his phone and dialed M

Murong Ling held onto her with all his might and he roared in a low voice.Due to his cold, his breath was a little unstable and he suddenly began to cough violently. She could feel his warm breath against her neck, intertwining with her own from time to time. It was hard to differentiate them.Miao Xiaobei was no longer struggling. She had been waiting to hear those three words for seven years. What was the point of him saying them now? Many things had already happened and they would never be able to turn back the clock. Both of them kept silent as Murong Ling's coughs started to quieten down. He leaned his warm face closer to her neck as he said in his hoarse voice, "I really love you.""I'm serious. I know just how wrong I was."Miao Xiaobei suddenly felt a dampness on her neck and was shocked. Looking into his tearful eyes, her heart began to ache."The thing is, I don't love you anymore."She suddenly stood up and stared at him, a cold and indifferent expression sweeping o

"You deliberately stood in the rain to get a fever so that you could stay with Mom. I guess Mom really hates you," he said.Upon listening to those words, the man in the bed opened his eyes, his face unwrinkled by any frown."Oh, are you not going to pretend to sleep anymore?" the child said, supporting his chin in his hand.Murong Ling blushed. How was this little kid smart enough to know that he was pretending to be asleep? He had thought there was no loophole in his plan. Even Miao Xiaobei had not realized it, so how could a child have figured it out?The little fellow sighed helplessly."You pretended to be sick in order to see how Mom would react, so there's no way you would have fallen asleep for real," he said, analyzing it logically.Murong Ling really didn't know whether he should cry or laugh in response. Why was this kid trying to act intelligent with that tiny brain of his? However, his attitude towards had at least improved since last time. He was speaking more and

In the end, she emerged victorious, and he was utterly defeated. He even had to pay for all the furniture in her house, including her son's toys.As it had already been exquisitely decorated, they were able to move in directly. Of course, the costly price of the apartment did make Miao Xiaobei feel more than a little heartache. However, in order to let her son live more comfortably and have a real home, she felt that the price was worth it.One week after moving in, Murong Ling turned up at their door dead drunk late in the night. She had never seen him looking so haggard and pathetic before. She couldn't bear to leave him outside alone, so she dragged him into the house. It took her a lot of effort, but she eventually managed to pull him onto the sofa."I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry...""Uh, what?" Miao Xiaobei could barely make out his drunk mumbles. She could not make sense of what he was saying, so she bent her body lower and leaned into him."I'm sorry... I'm sorry..."

The secretary, who was standing by the door, could not help but felt touched. She turned around and wiped away the tears that had sprung to her eyes unbidden. As the boy's biological father, Murong Ling's heart was filled with regret when he saw the mother and son hugging each other. He felt like kicking himself. How could he have done all those things in the past?"Mom, you really will not abandon me again?" the little fellow asked doubtfully."I swear honey, never again for as long as I live. From now on, you will stay with me, okay?"She let go of him and used her hand to wipe away his tears. The child hesitated for a moment before nodding, then suddenly burst into tears. This shocked the four of them."I'm not an abandoned child anymore. I have a mommy. Waaaaa..." he wailed noisily. This only made Miao Xiaobei feel even worse. The little fellow cried until his eyes were swollen like walnuts, only easing off after around half an hour. His shoulders were shaking continuously
