Author: A Short Novel
After several hours, the screeching wails that symbolized the safe arrival of a new human life rang out.

Murong Ling, who had been staying by Miao Wanwan's side, finally revealed a look of relief upon hearing the news.

He, too, had no idea why he had felt such a stab of fear when he'd seen her hopeless expression and watched her running frantically straight into the wall. It was as though he was afraid that she would leave him forever.

He suppressed the unsettling feeling in his heart and reasoned that it must be down to his hatred for her. No doubt he just didn't want her to die and permanently escape his wrath.

"Ling, go ahead and visit my elder sister."

Miao Wanwan leaned her head against the headboard of the bed, her pale face looking worried.

After listening to her words, Murong Ling looked at her tenderly and said, "There are plenty of doctors in her ward. There's no need for me to be there. Let's wait another two days, and then I'll request the heart transplant surgery for our baby. Don't worry, all right?"

Upon hearing what he had said, Miao Wanwan nodded, tears welling up in her eyes.

She lay in his arms tenderly, but her eyes were filled with a look of cunning and the corners of her lips rose into a cruel smirk.

In the ward, Miao Xiaobei was lying on the bed with a ghastly expression, looking as though the life had been sucked from her.

Her forehead was still wrapped in gauze, and her scrawny face made people feel sorry for her.

Her empty ward seemed desolate, and the lonely sound of the wind outside the window was the only noise one could hear.

As the sky gradually darkened, Miao Xiaobei opened her eyes and peered around. All she could see in front of her was the plain, white wall. She slowly closed her eyes again and withdrew into her mind.

The world had finally quietened down. Finally, she did not have to endure their humiliation and torture.

However, when she heard a noise from outside her door, she immediately widened her eyes and stared at the pale ceiling.

All of a sudden, a crackling sound could be heard, sounding extremely loud in the quiet ward.

She jerked her stiff neck to one side and gazed at the heavy rain strumming against the windows. Her lips curled into a miserable smile.

Look, even the Heavens were pitying her. Why was this poor girl still alive on this earth?

She couldn't help but cackle hysterically, and tears fell from the corners of her eyes onto the cotton pillow beneath her.

Murong Ling's cold-bloodedness and ruthlessness filled her mind. The thought of his words made her tremble with a mixture of fear and hatred.

She hated herself for rescuing him. She must have been blind.

"You're awake," a nurse commented as she pushed a cart into her ward.

She switched her attention to her and asked in a hoarse voice, "Where's my child?"

"It's a premature baby, so he's now in the incubator in the Pediatrics department. It's a boy."

The nurse spoke with a smile, unaware of what had happened in the operating room. She thought that the woman in front her was the same as any other mother who had just given birth.

Miao Xiaobei thanked her and closed her eyes, slipping into silence.

After the nurse changed her dressing, she was gripped by the feeling that the patient was a little strange. "Shouldn't a woman be joyful about the arrival of her baby?"

"Why wasn't there any response from her?" The nurse shook her head but did not dare to say much and left.

The patients who stayed in the VIP ward were generally either rich or members of elite society, and hence the nurses would only need to change their drips then leave.

After Miao Xiaobei heard the sound of the door closing, she opened her eyes and her lips trembled slightly.

In this world, the only true family member she had was this child.

However, she was unable to protect him, just like she had been unable to protect her own mother. All her life she had been powerless to stop the bullies around her.

"Sister, why are you crying?"

After Miao Wanwan saw Murong Ling leave the hospital, she came to visit her.

Upon hearing the voice, Miao Xiaobei turned her head to her, her eyes were filled with hatred.

This woman was indeed a "good" sister.

Miao Wanwan saw the look in her eyes and took an involuntary step back. Her face was filled with surprise and fear.

However, after just a few seconds, she seemed to come to her senses, patted her chest and walked towards Miao Xiaobei with a sickening smile on her face.

"Sister, don't look at me like this. You'll scare me," said Miao Wanwan mockingly. Miao Xiaobei was utterly disgusted by the pretentious look on her sister's face.

She went around to the side of the bed and her pale fingers gently pulled at the tube connected to the drip bag, a cheerful look brightening her countenance as she did so.

Her eyes were fixed on Miao Xiaobei's face. She wanted to see it contort in pain.

"Sister, I went to see your child just now and I couldn't be happier. My baby is going to have such a healthy heart in the future. Besides, I've another piece of good news to share with you, sister..."

Her entire being was focused on the sleeping child wrapped in her arms. She was so afraid that Miao Wanwan would fall off the cliff accidentally if she was startled or shifted her weight a little."Miao Xiaobei, I hate you so much, do you know that? My entire life, I've had to struggle just for a few scraps of happiness, but you snatched everything away. How can I not hate you?" she wailed.Murong Ling signaled for Miao Xiaobei to keep talking to her, then he silently edged towards the space behind her."Do you know how muc

Murong Ling held onto her with all his might and he roared in a low voice.Due to his cold, his breath was a little unstable and he suddenly began to cough violently. She could feel his warm breath against her neck, intertwining with her own from time to time. It was hard to differentiate them.Miao Xiaobei was no longer struggling. She had been waiting to hear those three words for seven years. What was the point of him saying them now? Many things had already happened and they would never be able to turn back the clock. Both of them kept silent as Murong Ling's coughs started to quieten down. "You deliberately stood in the rain to get a fever so that you could stay with Mom. I guess Mom really hates you," he said.Upon listening to those words, the man in the bed opened his eyes, his face unwrinkled by any frown."Oh, are you not going to pretend to sleep anymore?" the child said, supporting his chin in his hand.Murong Ling blushed. How was this little kid smart enough to know that he was pretending to be asleep? He had thought there was no loophole in his plan. Even Miao Xiaobei had not realized it, so how could a child have figured it out?The little fellow sighed helplessly."You pretended to be sick in order to see how Mom would react, so there's no way you would have fallen asleep for real," he said, analyzing it logically.Murong Ling really didn't know whether he should cry or laugh in response. Why was this kid trying to act intelligent with that tiny brain of his? However, his attitude towards had at least improved since last time. He was speaking more and
