chapter 8

Author: A Short Novel
By the time she got home, the sky was even darker.

The rain had become heavier, and the sound of lightning and thunder was extremely terrifying.

She had been in a panic the whole night. Whenever she closed her eyes, all she could see was Miao Xiaobei's face covered in red blood. It was terrifying.

However, she did not regret what she had done. If she wished to get everything that she wanted, she had to be merciless.

"Miao Xiaobei, blame it all on yourself. Don't blame me. Don't come and find me."

Miao Wanwan hid in the quilt and curled up in bed, mumbling in a low voice.

The next day...

Murong Ling was awakened by his phone ringing. He answered the call and found out that Miao Xiaobei was missing.

Without even changing his clothes, he drove to the hospital and searched the area, but he could not find her.

After looking at the CCTV footage, he realized that she had left the hospital after he had driven off yesterday.

The camera at the door showed that she had taken a cab and left the hospital.

"Are you all dead? A patient left your hospital, but no one knows about it?" he bellowed.

The doctors and nurses lowered their heads and didn't dare to say a word.

"Send people to look for her right away. If anything happens to her, I'll bury all of you along with this hospital."

Murong Ling turned around and left the monitoring room. His face was darkened and his eyes were red with rage.

He asked his secretary to check the route Miao Xiaobei had taken by cab, and he found that she had gone to the graveyard. He immediately rushed over.

The secretary was also shocked, so she tried to check all the security camera footage from the graveyard from yesterday to today.

The problem was that there were no cameras on the hill in the graveyard. The rest of the cameras were far away from that area.

Besides, it was raining heavily yesterday. Even if they wanted to use the footage to check the license plates of the vehicles that came and went, they couldn't see a thing. They were clueless about where they should start their search.

There were hundreds of thousands of taxis in the capital. Searching for the cab Miao Xiaobei had boarded without any clues would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Murong Ling sent out all his people to search the entire graveyard, but to no avail.

The search included all the cabs and private chauffeurs that were on duty on that day.

They had sent photos and asked every driver about Miao Xiaobei, yet none of them had fetched anyone from the graveyard that night. She had just disappeared into thin air.

"Continue the search. Bring her to me, whether she's dead or alive."

The fact that she had gone missing was driving him mad, and he suffered several consecutive sleepless nights.

Finally, they found a pair of shoes and some faint traces of blood at the bottom of the cliff in the graveyard.

The hospital verified that the blood belonged to Miao Xiaobei.

He stood at the bottom of the cliff and looked up. His heart was aching, but he still clung onto a glimpse of hope.

Had she been rescued by someone? If not, where was her body?

"Continue the search."

"Yes, sir."

A month later, he got news about Miao Xiaobei from a village hundreds of miles away.

The villagers gave him her belongings and ashes.

In a rage, Murong Ling acquired and demolished the hospital. He then buried her ashes in the cemetery at his old mansion.

His temperament changed tremendously overnight, and he left the two children with a nanny.

Ever since the day of the accident, Miao Wanwan had become paranoid. She was afraid that someone would find out the truth, and that Miao Xiaobei would come back alive.

After she learned that Ling had brought back her ashes and belongings, she finally felt at ease.

Three years later.

"Ye Qian, are you very free?"

A woman with short, neat hair was sitting in her office, listening to rhythmic knocking at the door.

Her delicate face looked helpless and the pen in her hand stopped writing.

The knocking on the door stopped. The office door was pushed open and a handsome face popped in.

"Miao Xiaobei, I'm very angry."

The man walked in, took off his coat, and threw it on her desk unceremoniously.

He narrowed his thin eyes and focused on her petite face.

Miao Xiaobei raised her head and stared at him. She was genuinely jealous of his delicate skin.

Moreover, he was a happy-go-lucky man. Though he was noisy at times and loved to cause trouble, he was a kind-hearted man.

She could never forget how she had been pushed off the cliff. When she regained her consciousness, the first thing she saw was the smile on his face.

Clean, pure, and warm. It was a smile that touched her heart.

It was also because of him that she was able to sit here today.

"Murong Ling, guess you can't wait to send me to prison, huh? I never knew you to be so cruel. I love you so much, and you know that I have cancer, yet you're still sending me to that gloomy hellhole. I'm devastated."Miao Wanwan looked up at the sky as she spoke, a single tear falling from the corner of her eye.Miao Xiaobei paid absolutely no attention to her words. Her entire being was focused on the sleeping child wrapped in her arms. She was so afraid that Miao Wanwan would fall off the cliff accidentally if she was startled or shifted her weight a little."Miao Xiaobei, I hate you so much, do you know that? Why you are better than me at everything? Even your luck is better! Why don't I have anything? My entire life, I've had to struggle just for a few scraps of happiness, but you snatched everything away. How can I not hate you?" she wailed.Murong Ling signaled for Miao Xiaobei to keep talking to her, then he silently edged towards the space behind her."Do you know how muc

Miao Xiaobei agreed and followed Li Xin into the cafe, pulling along her son by his little hand. However, as soon as Miao Xiaobei sat down, Li Xin grabbed her bag and legged it out of the door.Naturally, without sparing a moment to think, she gave chase.By the time she had gotten back her bag and returned to the shop, she found to her horror that her precious son was gone. She searched the entire milk tea shop but he seemed to have just vanished into thin air.She had even searched the surrounding area, but to no avail. She returned to the milk tea shop and requested the CCTV footage. Unfortunately, their seats just so happened to be in a blind spot and it had not been caught on the footage.Luckily, there was a CCTV camera at the entrance of the store. When she saw that it was Miao Wanwan who had taken away her son, all of the color instantly drained from her face."Isn't she supposed to be in Murong Ling's prison? Why was she here?"Miao Bei took out his phone and dialed M

Murong Ling held onto her with all his might and he roared in a low voice.Due to his cold, his breath was a little unstable and he suddenly began to cough violently. She could feel his warm breath against her neck, intertwining with her own from time to time. It was hard to differentiate them.Miao Xiaobei was no longer struggling. She had been waiting to hear those three words for seven years. What was the point of him saying them now? Many things had already happened and they would never be able to turn back the clock. Both of them kept silent as Murong Ling's coughs started to quieten down. He leaned his warm face closer to her neck as he said in his hoarse voice, "I really love you.""I'm serious. I know just how wrong I was."Miao Xiaobei suddenly felt a dampness on her neck and was shocked. Looking into his tearful eyes, her heart began to ache."The thing is, I don't love you anymore."She suddenly stood up and stared at him, a cold and indifferent expression sweeping o

"You deliberately stood in the rain to get a fever so that you could stay with Mom. I guess Mom really hates you," he said.Upon listening to those words, the man in the bed opened his eyes, his face unwrinkled by any frown."Oh, are you not going to pretend to sleep anymore?" the child said, supporting his chin in his hand.Murong Ling blushed. How was this little kid smart enough to know that he was pretending to be asleep? He had thought there was no loophole in his plan. Even Miao Xiaobei had not realized it, so how could a child have figured it out?The little fellow sighed helplessly."You pretended to be sick in order to see how Mom would react, so there's no way you would have fallen asleep for real," he said, analyzing it logically.Murong Ling really didn't know whether he should cry or laugh in response. Why was this kid trying to act intelligent with that tiny brain of his? However, his attitude towards had at least improved since last time. He was speaking more and

In the end, she emerged victorious, and he was utterly defeated. He even had to pay for all the furniture in her house, including her son's toys.As it had already been exquisitely decorated, they were able to move in directly. Of course, the costly price of the apartment did make Miao Xiaobei feel more than a little heartache. However, in order to let her son live more comfortably and have a real home, she felt that the price was worth it.One week after moving in, Murong Ling turned up at their door dead drunk late in the night. She had never seen him looking so haggard and pathetic before. She couldn't bear to leave him outside alone, so she dragged him into the house. It took her a lot of effort, but she eventually managed to pull him onto the sofa."I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry...""Uh, what?" Miao Xiaobei could barely make out his drunk mumbles. She could not make sense of what he was saying, so she bent her body lower and leaned into him."I'm sorry... I'm sorry..."

The secretary, who was standing by the door, could not help but felt touched. She turned around and wiped away the tears that had sprung to her eyes unbidden. As the boy's biological father, Murong Ling's heart was filled with regret when he saw the mother and son hugging each other. He felt like kicking himself. How could he have done all those things in the past?"Mom, you really will not abandon me again?" the little fellow asked doubtfully."I swear honey, never again for as long as I live. From now on, you will stay with me, okay?"She let go of him and used her hand to wipe away his tears. The child hesitated for a moment before nodding, then suddenly burst into tears. This shocked the four of them."I'm not an abandoned child anymore. I have a mommy. Waaaaa..." he wailed noisily. This only made Miao Xiaobei feel even worse. The little fellow cried until his eyes were swollen like walnuts, only easing off after around half an hour. His shoulders were shaking continuously
