chapter 3

Author: Petite One
At ten o’clock, a team of staff members from Dragon's Ascent Investment Company arrived at Vantage Company.

Sitting in a corner, Jade raised her head slightly and saw Zephaniah, who was the first to enter the room. He looked really stylish in his dark gray suit. His thin lips were pressed together, and with his indifferent expression, he gave off the feeling that he was a difficult person to approach.

After Zephaniah shook hands with Mister Whittle, he habitually looked across the meeting room. He unintentionally saw Jade in the corner. She had her head lowered as she stared at her laptop on the table, and through her side profile, she looked slightly chubby.

Zephaniah’s gaze stayed on her for only a second before he pulled out a chair and sat down.

As the leader of a leading investment company, Zephaniah made others feel how strong of a character he was with just a few simple sentences. Even the experienced Mister Whittle looked a little nervous when they talked.

After a while, the secretary pushed in a trolley of coffee and snacks.

When Jade noticed that the secretary’s hands were a little too full, she got up and helped her to serve the coffee to the few people from Dragon's Ascent Investment Company.

When she served a cup of coffee to Zephaniah, she subconsciously chose a warm one without a sugar packet beside the cup.

Although Zephaniah only came home once a week in the past, he sometimes had work to do as well. Jade had secretly taken note of the way he liked to drink his coffee, which was not too hot. He also did not like to add sugar to it.

Her actions today were completely out of habit.

Zephaniah was still talking to Mister Whittle, but when Jade served him a cup of coffee, putting it in front of him, he detected that there was no sugar packet on the saucer. The coffee was warm as well. His hands, which were folded together, furled a little, but the speed of his speech did not slow down.

The meeting was never meant to be long. It ended after around forty minutes.

Being able to work with Dragon's Ascent Investment Company made Mister Whittle put on a really happy face. After the meeting, he personally brought Zephaniah to the restaurant downstairs for lunch, while others followed them from behind.

The prices for food at the restaurant below Jade’s company were quite high, and it cost at least thousands to reserve the entire restaurant for lunch. Since there were quite a lot of them, the restaurant decided to serve them a buffet.

“Miss Redfern, here for a meal?”

Jade was choosing the dishes she wanted to eat when her colleague came over and greeted her. She hummed in agreement. “I just happened to be hungry.”

They chatted for a while before her colleague suddenly changed the subject, speaking like a true gossip-monger. “Did you see Mister Owens from Dragon's Ascent Investment Company? He’s so young! He doesn’t look like he’s even thirty years old. I can’t believe he’s so rich.

“Mister Owens doesn’t look like someone who’s amiable, but I have to say, he’s quite good looking. He’s even comparable to the celebrities. Hey, do you think he’s married? I guess a rich man like him should have a few mistresses outside, right?”

That colleague of hers gossiped while she cast a few glances at the spot where Mister Whittle was seated in. Her eyes were full of desire, and when Jade saw this, she also looked in the same direction.

The man’s tie was loose while he casually spoke with the people there. Yet, it seemed like all eyes were on him.

Jade suddenly smiled as if she understood something.

‘Look at how outstanding that man is. You wouldn’t know how many girls out there are longing for him, and some of them might be willing to be in a secret relationship with him. Here I was, stupid enough to think about making him fall for me and hoping that we could be together forever.

‘How ridiculous!’

“All men like that are smart and can control themselves well. You won’t get any benefits from him.” Jade lowered her head and continued to select her food.

Her colleague was curious. “How do you know that, Miss Redfern?”

‘I slept with Zephaniah for three years, how could I not know his personality?’ Jade thought secretly.

“Miss Redfern, why aren’t you wearing your ring?” Her colleague was observant. She noticed that there was only a faint ring mark on Jade’s ring finger. “Did you… divorce your husband?”

Jade hummed as her answer.

When they got married, she had also thought of inviting her colleagues to her wedding party. However, Zephaniah told her not to involve him, as though it was better for him if fewer people learned about their marriage. Therefore, she never told anyone in the company who her husband was.

“Men nowadays like pretty and perfect women.” Her colleague grumbled and comforted Jade. “Miss Redfern, you’re still young, and you don’t have a kid either. Don’t worry, you can easily get another man.”

Jade could not help but take a look at her belly.

It was true that she got divorced, but she did it together with the baby inside her.

At that moment, someone passed by Jade with a food tray, and there seemed to be some seafood in the tray. A faint, fishy scent then wafted into Jade’s nose, and she felt her stomach churn.

Jade pushed her colleague away and ran toward the restroom, covering her mouth with her hand.

The colleague who was pushed found the situation incredibly odd.

Zephaniah unintentionally saw Jade running toward the restroom with a hand over her mouth, and she looked pale. As she ran, her dress clung to her body, and her belly looked a little round. His gaze darkened.

The somewhat familiar feeling made Jade flinch. She subconsciously wanted to pull her arm back, but the man tightly grabbed onto her. Jade looked up and met his gaze, and she immediately lost herself in the gentle and loving eyes. She gulped. “Ze-Zephaniah.” The man lowered his eyes and glanced at Deniz. Without any explanation, Zephaniah stepped forward and lifted up Jade. Deniz, who was left behind, stared as Jade’s feet were suddenly lifted in the air. His gaze trailed after them, and he was left speechless by what he saw before him. He gulped and chased after Zephaniah. “Hey, director! Put our director down!” After he chased after them for a few steps, he got worried about their luggage. Deniz was torn between the two options before him. He saw Gemarya then and rushed toward him. The man patted his shoulder. “Mister Owens will take care of Miss Redfern. You just need to check-in into the hotel.” Deniz noticed that Gemarya had a faint smile, and he suddenly unders

After asking what she wanted to know, Jade looked down and stared at Nephele in front of her. “Do you need me to send you home?” “No need. Don’t think that I’ll thank you after helping me once.” Nephele’s smile was pale, and her voice was cold. “Whatever.” Jade looked away and turned away. She walked toward the elevator at the back, and the sound of her high heels stepping on the ground resounded through the corridor. Her tone was very cold when she added, “I hope you can answer the call on time next time, so that I’ll not be troubled like today.” After saying that, she reached the elevator. After she waited quietly for a while, she entered and chose the first floor. She gave off a restrained aura, but she was still obviously capable and imposing.Ding! As the door of the elevator slowly opened, Jade walked out and saw an elderly woman in a wheelchair being slowly pushed forward. Jade had met Heidi’s mother once at Howells family. Compared to her appearance now, the chang

It was as if Jade found it unbelievable. She ignored the dampness and flipped the document that she held tightly in her hands open. She skimmed over it, and her eyes became brighter. From the corner of her eyes, she saw her cell phone on the table. She picked it up and dialed a contact. No one answered the call for a very long time. Jade could only end the call and look up while she asked Deniz, “Do you know where Miss Kirby went?” Deniz pursed his lips. “I overheard her answering a call when she headed out. It seemed like a phone call from a doctor.” “Doctor…” Jade was stunned for a second, but she quickly came back to her senses. She retrieved her coat from the clothes stand behind her and was ready to leave. “I’m heading out. If Mister Whittle looks for me, tell him that I’m meeting a client.” After she said that, she put on her coat and left. ... A woman with pale complexion was leaning against the hospital corridor’s white tile wall. Her eyes were filled with des

After the regular meeting on Monday, Mister Whittle asked Jade to stay. She could guess what the subsequent discussion would contain. When she walked out from the meeting room, he spoke to an assistant on the way to his office. “Ask Nephele to come to my office.” The assistant quickly hummed and ran away. He disappeared at the end of the corridor. Jade remained silent and followed Mister Whittle to the elevator. When the door of the elevator slowly closed, Mister Whittle sighed. “A few vice presidents and I unanimously adopted a resolution. We’ll let you take up the position of director of the Marketing Department.” Mister Whittle stood at the position near to the door of the elevator, while Jade stood at the back. It was not easy for her to immediately notice his expression, but she could feel that his emotions were not very good.“You’re worried that I don’t have sufficient qualifications. You can’t convince others and you can’t be sure whether I can actually handle this pos

“Didn’t Mister Long tell you that he only hired you because of a friend’s recommendation?” Jade took another sip of wine. She noticed that Heidi’s body was swaying, as if she had understood something, so she continued. “Didn’t you ask him who’s the friend? I believe it’s very hard for someone with a past of academic fraud to seek out a high-paying job, right?” Heidi suddenly recalled what Mister Long had told her when he instructed her to come over in the morning. He seemed to have been implying that it would be easier to seal the deal with someone familiar. She had thought he was indirectly asking her to build a good relationship with the other party so that things would be easier in the future, but clearly, she had misunderstood Mister Long’s meaning. Heidi suddenly looked up at Jade and clenched her teeth. “It’s you.” Jade appeared nonchalant. She placed her wine glass on the table with a soft clink. The sound made Heidi tremble as if it had hit her heart. “Your mother is

During the weekend, before Jade went out, she was not surprised to receive a call from Mister Long. After calmly listening to him, she chuckled cheerfully. “It’s okay, Mister Long. Please go ahead with your work. You can just send a staff member you trust to discuss the business with me.”She stopped for a while, patiently listened to the question on the other side, and said again, “It’s not really a big deal. I just wanted to give you some feedback on the aspect of the data issues. This was initially concerning the Data Department, but after all, you’re my important client…” After she hung up, she showed the ghost of a smile. She turned back and glanced at the kitchen. “Mum, I want to go to the supermarket and buy some groceries. What do you want to eat at noon?” When Jade’s mother heard it, she could not help but look surprised. Before she spoke, the caregiver came out in a hurry. “Miss Redfern, didn’t you say you’re meeting a client later? You can just leave this task to me.”
