chapter 8

Author: Mo Shengge

She snapped out of her random and recurring daydream and went back to writing the article she’d been working on the past two weeks.

The whole thing was like a videotape. It kept replaying in her mind over and over again, like she just had to let it do so or else she’d forget everything that happened that day. Especially whenever she was unbelievably stressed at work.

Everything just jumbled up in her thought till she would end up zoning out, blankly staring at something. Thinking of him and that last time she was with him just left her completely wordless.

Jessi could only sigh or scream at what she was seeing. Pinned on the spotless flooring, she chose neither and kept her stoic expression on. “Why’re you here?”

The man in front of her didn’t reply to that. Instead, he waited for her expression to change, while badly hoping it would.

“You should go,” she said after a moment of him just staring at her and saying nothing.

He sighed and looked somewhere else. Of course, he wasn’t going anywhere. He needed to see the kids. “I wanna see them.”

Now on edge and petrified, Jessi wanted to shake her head. But she had to stick to her story. “Who?”

“Jessi. Please.” His voice was louder now. He pleaded again when she still didn’t budge. His begging seemed earnest. And urgent.

But she couldn’t do this now. She was actually surprised she hadn’t fainted yet. When he’d first stepped through the entrance, his somber gaze pinned her on the floor. Now they stood a few steps away from the entrance door. “I gotta be somewhere else.”

“I’m going with you.” He held her by the arm. He seemed to not mind dragging her out of the restaurant as soon as she pushed him away.

“Yeah, bye—” Twisting her arm to get free from his hold, she stepped to the side, trying her best to avoid his intimidating and attentive stare, which was only making things worse.

            “Jessi.”

She stepped back when he was about to grab her arm again. “We don’t have anything to talk about.”

He pursed his lips and took a long deep breath. He’d also noticed they were right about making a scene already. His head was hurting, still, and he hoped nobody noticed him or something. She’d gone out to the parking lot before he could say anything more.

He’d probably just have to tail her.
