"Why would you think that?"
Why?
Was he really expecting her to answer that?
Mykaela gripped her phone, leaving it on speaker mode as she hid under the covers. His incredulous tone just made her scowl. As if he didn't know what she was talking about.
"Did you or did you not?"
"They're the ones telling you lies." Lorenzio sighed on the other line, letting static noise come through.
It was almost midnight and she should be reading through her new medical books, but he randomly rang her a minute ago to ask why she was ignoring his messages. "I actually thought we could be friends."
"What?"
"I expected too much, apparently."
"I am a friend, Mykaela."
Friend?
If he actually was her friend, he would've been totally honest and would've come clean sooner than the Falcos could tell her the real deal. Then she wouldn't have felt this betrayed and unimportant.
Did he not trust her? Probably. He most likely thought she was just another sacrificial pawn he could make use of later.
"Please just forget everything they told you."
"I wish it were that easy, Enzo. Really."
"Bellezza..."
Mykaela massaged her forehead, feeling dizzy all of a sudden. She really didn't expect they'd be having this talk tonight. But since he'd given her an opportunity, better yet address the issues that had been causing her more anxiety than usual.
"Let's not make a big deal--"
"You know what hurts most? You acted like you cared. All these months. Only for me to find out--" None of it was real. None of it mattered now. It was all just pretend to him.
"No. I mean, yes. I didn't tell you a few things," he said in a calmer tone. "It doesn't change the fact that I care about you."
"I don't know anymore." For some reason, hot tears filled her eyes. Why wouldn't he just come clean? "You lied. All those months."
"No." Enzo sighed. "I didn't tell you about Leo's plans. But I didn't lie to you."
"Forget it." She wiped the senseless tears off her cheeks. "Look. I'm just gonna have to get the money so I won't owe you anymore."
"Mykaela, come on..."
"I'll pay you back, every cent, but not now. Sorry. It's gonna take a while."
"Bellezza, per favore."
"Thank you. For all your help. Thanks."
"Hey. Don't talk like I'm never gonna see you again."
She hung up, took a few deep breaths, and cried to herself, helplessly curled in a fetal position under her blanket. Why did her chest hurt this bad? Why was she even crying?
Ugh.

The next day, after her last class, she decided to go home early for a change, too tired to burn more mental energy in the library. Also, she was failing to manage another anxiety attack.
No surprise there. It had been a difficult couple of months without Miles around. He used to be her Xanax. Too bad he couldn't stick around anymore.
Past five in the afternoon and before she could hop on the bus, an expensive-looking gray car drove up to her by the sidewalk. It was a new convertible, unfamiliar. A bouquet of her favorite flowers were in the passenger seat, with a poker-faced Lorenzio Tomassini behind the wheel.
Her legs froze. She stopped dead in the middle of the sidewalk. What on Earth? When did he even fly out to New York?
"Hi."
"What are you doing?"
"Apologizing."
Her back straightened, and her throat felt dry all of a sudden. Students had started teeming the path, making her feel uneasy while her unexpected visitor kept following her in his luxury vehicle. "Apology accepted. Go home."
"Not when you're this mad."
"I'm not," she lied, resuming her hasty pace along the sidewalk. So he flew all the way out here just to say sorry? Jeez. "I just don't like being lied to."
"I'm sorry. Please just get in."
"Why?"
"I tried to tell you things. Once. You didn't listen." A car honked loudly behind them and drove past him the next second.
"What?"
"You were...too preoccupied with your issues with Maximiliano then."
"Are you serious?" She scoffed.
"Please get in the car. I'll drive you straight to your place after we talk."
"Why should I trust that?"
"Because I just want to talk. I can't sleep knowing you just hate me now."
Good, then. She wasn't the only one having sleepless nights. "I don't hate you."
"Your actions tell me otherwise."
"Fine." She stepped into his car, embarrassed by the scene they were making. Two of her classmates even saw her and arched their curious brows. "Please drive me home now."
"Alright." Enzo stepped on the gas.
They'd talk it out. One last time.
