chapter 5

Author: A Short Novel
Miao Xiaobei, rushing down the stairs after her friend, saw it all happen with her own eyes.

She pushed through the crowd frantically and stood in front of her good friend, who was lying in a pool of her own fresh blood. Miao Xiaobei dropped to the floor in a panic, drawing her friend into her arms.

She shouted, "Doctor, doctor, help!" Her voice was weak and thin, but she still managed a desperate screech.

Everything that had happened was beyond the expectations of Murong Ling. He fixed his sharp gaze on Miao Wanwan, who was still sitting on the ground.

Seeing her crying for help despite the pain she was in and the fact that she was suffering from a shortness of breath, he strode towards her.

The driver was perplexed after the hit becasuebecause he had just been driving his car as usual. "How could it have happened?"

Seeing Murong Ling coming over, Miao Xiaobei immediately sank into a subservient position, kowtowing heavily to him from the floor.

"It was all my fault. I was vicious and I hurt all of you. It was all my fault. Please, please save her. Could you? I'm begging you."

She had realized that she shouldn't have asked her to come as soon she found out out how vicious and cruel they truly were.

Kneeling on the ground with one of his legs bent, Murong Ling held Xiaobei in his arms and asked the doctors to take the child and the woman away.

Suddenly the woman raised her hand and grasped his arm.

She said, "You have to trust Xiaobei. She has never lied to you." She relaxed her grip after finishing her words.

Miao Xiaobei pushed him aside and struggled to follow her friend who had been carried away, leaving behind only Murong Ling and a pool of blood.

Miao Wanwan couldn't help but fall to the ground. She could feel an ice-cold chill sweep across her at the thought of the way he had just glared at her.

"How did that woman know that Murong Ling was not the father of the child?

"I’m supposed to be the only one who knows the truth. How did she find out?"

Miao Wanwan couldn't believe it.

"Ling, please just listen to me. I didn't mean to do it. Someone pushed me from behind and I lost my balance, so the child was... I swear, I didn't mean to do that," Miao Wanwan said, lying on the ground and wailing like a spoilt child.

Murong Ling gave her a cold glimpse after letting her finish her words, then he ordered someone to take her away. He turned around and followed Miao Xiaobei.

The doctor examined the baby and confirmed that it was unharmed. However, the woman in the emergency room was not brought out for a long time.

Miao Xiaobei stood alone outside the door anxiously, waiting for news of her friend. She was chewing her lower lip so fervently that it began to bleed.

She really wished that she was the one dying instead.

If she had never been born, her mother wouldn't have died, her baby wouldn't have been in danger, and her friend wouldn't have been hit by the car.

Wracked with unbearable regret, she banged her head against the wall.

Murong Ling wanted to walk up and stop her, but when he remembered that she was the cause of all of the mess, he paused and just watched from a distance.

An hour later, the emergency lights went out and the doctors came out of the room.

Miao Xiaobei stopped pacing, grabbed a doctor's arm and asked, "How is she? She's gonna be just fine, isn't she?"

She eagerly looked at the doctor, hoping that he would give her the answer she wanted.

The doctor took off the mask from his solemn face and said, "I'm sorry, but we did our best. The patient's spleen has been damaged and there's nothing more we can do. I'm really sorry for your loss."

"It can't be true. She can't die. You're lying to me, aren't you?"

Miao Xiaobei shook her head in disbelief. Lanlan had just been fine a few moments ago and now she was going to die?

"I'm sorry once again." The doctor put his mask back on and broke away from her grip.

"You must be on their side. You liar! I'm a doctor myself and I can save her on my own!!" Saying that, she ran into the emergency room.

Murong Ling grabbed her arm and held her firmly in his arms. He had never imagined that things would end up this way.

Miao Xiaobei cried bitterly for a long time before she suddenly went silent.

He thought she had calmed down a little. No sooner had he let go of her body than she fell to the ground.

Noticing that she had fallen unconscious, Murong Ling carried her back to her ward and lingered for a while.

Then he left and sent his men to deal with the driver as well as to handle the woman's funeral and compensation.

He didn't go back to the ward until late at night.

She was still asleep. He touched her arm and found that it was boiling hot.

He hurriedly called the doctor to come and put her on a drip. After a whole night's efforts, however, her temperature was still rising.

Only then did Murong Ling and the doctors begin to understand that things were not going well.

In the dark corridor outside the ward, some doctors were standing in front of Murong Ling, frightened and with their heads deeply lowered。

"A whole day has passed and you still haven't found the cause of her sickness. How could a hospital as large as yours be so useless? I'll give you one more day. If she still doesn't wake up afterwards, I will kick all of you out of the capital city." After saying that, he went back into the ward, his face as cold as ice.

Miao Xiaobei was lying quietly in the bed, both hands connected to the drip. Her face was rendered colorless and pale.

She had never before been so obedient and docile in front of him.

He took a step forward and held her hot hands in his, feeling how bony and thin she'd become.

He couldn't believe that she was now so emaciated.

How was this little kid smart enough to know that he was pretending to be asleep? He had thought there was no loophole in his plan. Even Miao Xiaobei had not realized it, so how could a child have figured it out?The little fellow sighed helplessly."You pretended to be sick in order to see how Mom would react, so there's no way you would have fallen asleep for real," he said, analyzing it logically.Murong Ling really didn't know whether he should cry or laugh in response. Why was this kid trying to act intelligent with that tiny brain of his? However, his attitude towards had at least improved since last time. He was speaking more and
