chapter 6

Penulis: A Short Novel
He didn't know why, but when he heard what her friend had said the other day, he felt completed panicked and scared.

He worried that he had really misunderstood her and hurt the wrong person.

He was afraid that he still didn't understand clearly who was right and who was not.

He was afraid that he would really fall for her.

All these ideas made his heart palpitate with terror.

By this time, Miao Xiaobei had been in a coma for a whole week. Though her temperature had fallen, there was still no sign of her waking up.

Miao Wanwan visited her twice during that period.

Murong Ling couldn't explain why he would feel so infuriated when he saw her crying or nagging at him.

In the end, the innocent doctors and nurses were the ones who had to bear the brunt of his fury.

"A week has passed and she still hasn't woken up. What has taken you so long to tackle a simple fever? You should be ashamed to call yourselves medical professionals!" Murong Ling said wrathfully.

"Mr. Mu, things are not as they appear. This is happening not because of our incapability, but because the patient herself has no wish to live."

Hearing these words, Murong Ling's pupils contracted slightly. At the thought of what had happened that day, he...

"Now she doesn't even want her own child, does she?"

At that one moment he was struck by terror, fearing that she would sleep like this forever.

Suddenly something occurred to him and he went to one side of the bed.

"Since you have such a death wish, I will send your child and everyone related to you to hell. Miao Xiaobei, how truly corrupt you are to have killed your friend. People like you pollute the very air of this world."

After Murong Ling had finished these words, the room went so quiet that only his own breath could be heard.

The doctors and secretary were standing at the door, staring at him with their jaws hanging open, wondering whether they had imagined what they had just seen.

Lying in the bed, Miao Xiaobei's fingers twitched ever so slightly and the secretary happened to catch sight of it.

Over the next few days, ceaseless curses and insults could be heard from the ward, and even some noises which were more unpleasant to hear, like the cries of the child.

Finally, on the morning of the fourth day:

She woke up. The doctors breathed a sigh of relief and, at the same time, they began to see Murong Ling in a totally different way.

When Miao Xiaobei opened her eyes, she saw unfamiliar several faces staring back at her.

Among those faces was one that she particularly loathed and despised. She turned her gaze to the medical instruments on both sides of her bed and wondered what had happened to her.

Seeing that she had waken up, Murong Ling asked the doctor to examine her. He didn't allow any of the them except himself to leave the room until it was confirmed that she was all right.

He hesitated for a while before saying, "Everything concerning your friend has been properly arranged. The driver has been sent to jail."

"So now you no longer hate anyone, right? I don't want the child anymore. You can dispose of him as you like. I just want a divorce."

Now her understanding of the situation was crystal clear and no hope remained in her.

He had already known that Miao Wanwan had done this on purpose, but he had still managed to get a scapegoat for her.

He'd always been taking sides.

"I was asleep for such a long time that I still had the same delusions about him when I woke up," she thought to herself.

Murong Ling was agitated upon hearing this.

"This was nothing more than an accident. A divorce is an absolute impossibility. I won't hear of such a thing."

"Ah-hah." Upon hearing this, Miao Xiaobei simply sneered and closed her eyes without saying a word.

After telling him that she didn't want to talk to him, Murong Ling left the ward in a rage.

Miao Xiaobei didn't open her eyes until he was gone. Then she lifted herself up, plucked the needle from the back of her hand, and walked out of the ward with her slippers on in the opposite direction to the one he had left in.

Miao Xiaobei walked out of the hospital via the back door, stopped a taxi with a wave of her hand, and left the hospital.

Miao Wanwan happened to see her do it.

She hadn't expected that she would wake up so soon, which really surprised her.

Ling's attitude towards her had completely changed since that day.

His calls had seemed rather perfunctory, and he had been staying with Miao Xiaobei all day long, completely ignoring her existence and that of her child.

She stopped another taxi and followed her directly.

An hour later, she saw Xiaobei walk out of a neighborhood with a bunch of chrysanthemums in her hands.

It seemed that this was where the woman lived.

She really had not wanted her to wake up.

Because when she woke up, many secrets would no longer be safe, including the one about her own child.

That was why she had a crazy idea in her mind that Xiaobei had to die.

If she were to die, her secrets would remain unknown forever and her status would never be threatened.

The idea slowly corrupted her soul like a foul poison.

I love you so much, and you know that I have cancer, yet you're still sending me to that gloomy hellhole. I'm devastated."Miao Wanwan looked up at the sky as she spoke, a single tear falling from the corner of her eye.Miao Xiaobei paid absolutely no attention to her words. Her entire being was focused on the sleeping child wrapped in her arms. She was so afraid that Miao Wanwan would fall off the cliff accidentally if she was startled or shifted her weight a little."Miao Xiaobei, I hate you so much, do you know that? Why you are better than me at everything? Even your luck is better! Why don't I have anything? My entire life, I've had to struggle just for a few scraps of happiness, but you snatched everything away. How can I not hate you?" she wailed.Murong Ling signaled for Miao Xiaobei to keep talking to her, then he silently edged towards the space behind her."Do you know how muc

Murong Ling held onto her with all his might and he roared in a low voice.Due to his cold, his breath was a little unstable and he suddenly began to cough violently. She could feel his warm breath against her neck, intertwining with her own from time to time. It was hard to differentiate them.Miao Xiaobei was no longer struggling. She had been waiting to hear those three words for seven years. What was the point of him saying them now? Many things had already happened and they would never be able to turn back the clock. Both of them kept silent as Murong Ling's coughs started to quieten down. He leaned his warm face closer to her neck as he said in his hoarse voice, "I really love you.""I'm serious. I know just how wrong I was."Miao Xiaobei suddenly felt a dampness on her neck and was shocked. "You deliberately stood in the rain to get a fever so that you could stay with Mom. I guess Mom really hates you," he said.Upon listening to those words, the man in the bed opened his eyes, his face unwrinkled by any frown."Oh, are you not going to pretend to sleep anymore?" the child said, supporting his chin in his hand.Murong Ling blushed. How was this little kid smart enough to know that he was pretending to be asleep? He had thought there was no loophole in his plan. Even Miao Xiaobei had not realized it, so how could a child have figured it out?The little fellow sighed helplessly."You pretended to be sick in order to see how Mom would react, so there's no way you would have fallen asleep for real," he said, analyzing it logically.Murong Ling really didn't know whether he should cry or laugh in response. Why was this kid trying to act intelligent with that tiny brain of his? However, his attitude towards had at least improved since last time. He was speaking more and

From now on, you will stay with me, okay?"She let go of him and used her hand to wipe away his tears. The child hesitated for a moment before nodding, then suddenly burst into tears. This shocked the four of them."I'm not an abandoned child anymore.
