The day was over quickly. I grab my phone to call mom.

"Hi." Her voice says through the phone.

"We are done at school and I don't't know how to get home." I tell her unintentionally leaving out her greeting.

"My mom says you can come today." A voice says behind me and I turn to see Holly standing beside me.

"Mom. Hold on," I say and put my hand over the phone before mouthing "What? "To Holly.

"You can come today to get your teeth whitened. "She says and I nod .

"Mom. Don't come for a while. I'm going somewhere. "I say .

"Oh . where are you going to? "She asks .

"I'm going to see a dentist. "Itell her.

"Dentist? "The suprise in her tone is evident.  She is wondering why I need to go to the dentist.

"Yeah. I want to get my teeth whitened. "

"Teeth whitening?" She asks and I nod even though she can't see me. "Look. Sam . I'm not comfortable with you going around on your third day here. And who are you going with might I ask?"

"She is my..." I falter.  Is Holly  my friend? I look over at her and she gives me a smile.

"My friend ." I finish. I can tell shes nervous with the way her breathing hitches.

"Okay. But text me your address. " She says and my heart melts at the thought of someone caring for me .

"Yeah. Sure bye." I tell her and hang up.

I give Holly my phone and she looks at me in shock.  "Text my mom the address. "I tell her and she nods.

"I can't wait for Mia and Dennis to come back tomorrow, "Holly exclaims as we walk to her mom's office.

"Who?" I can't help but ask .

"They are our friends.  They have this habit of not resuming on the first day of school . "She explains.

"Oh." I say.

"Mia is kinda proud.  So don't mind her if she says anything stupid. "Holly says.

"Oh. I already know how to deal with people like that." I tell her.

We arrived there and mom was already there.

"You should have told me you were coming to candice's place." She says as soon as she sees me.

"Candice? "I ask.

"Yeah." She replies and a woman comes out from one of the rooms.

"Hi,"she says.

"Hello."I reply and I notice the deep resemblance between Holly and her.

"I'm candice.  Holly's mom." She introduces.

"I'm Samantha. But I prefer you call me Sam." I tell her.

"Ok then. Shall we. "She gestures to her office. I nod and follow her inside.

The whole process didn't take more than two hours.  After everything and mom and I are on our way home,she speaks up.

"So. Are you and Holly friends? "She asks.

"I would not say we are friends.  I  ate lunch  today with her friends ." I explain.

"Her friends? You are lucky then." She remarks.

"Why?" I ask.

"They are what somewhat the popular students of thier school. "She says and I nod.

She pulls into our driveway.  I come out of the car thanking her and running to my room. I set my phone beside me and wait for Joy's call.

I'll call you back. She said . Just when I want to give up hope the screen of my phone flashes to life .

I pick it up and joy's voice brings light to my day.

"Hello," Her weak voice sounds through the phone and I know that this is one of her last moment.

"Joy." I whisper on the phone already tearing up.

"It's almost time." She whispers and I whimper.

"Think about it. Don't end up regretting it like I did. Please. I'm about to die in less than one hour and my mom is yet to show. I want to spend the last few moments of my life with you. Ask them for forgiveness and forgive them too.  "She begs and the pain is evident in her voice.

"J...Joy...pl...please don't go.  I beg you. I really  want us to fulfill our promise together ." I sob.

"Don't cry. You have the opportunity that I don't. Just promise me no one will get hurt within you. Please. "She says weakly and I get that hollow feeling that its almost time.

"I promise.  You know you are the best thing that has ever happened to me." I tell her through my tears. She coughs for a long time and I know its time to let go of the two best years in my life.

"Bye. Sam." She says and the line goes dead. I drop the phone and cry my eyes out my best friend just died and I wasn't even there to hold her hand or I'm  never going to attend her funeral. I'm  really  a terrible person.

My mind goes back to the day we met...

I fucking hate everything, everyone, even myself. "Ugh" I groan out loud  and  sit on the stupid small bed in this stupid small room.  The plain walls filled me with dread and loneliness.  I'm not supposed to be here. I'm  not supposed to be here. "I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE!!"I scream angrily as I smash the stupid glass cup beside me on the wall.

"Whatever did that glass cup do to you?" A girl asks me as she leans against the wall  in the most relaxed position ever.

She must be one of those snobby matrons cause she looks so relaxed. But then again she is wearing the damn uniform.

"What do you want now. To lecture me on how I'm  not too youngto make a difference?" I ask her quoting  my  words.

"Whoa. Someone is pissed," She says and raises her hands in surrender.  She walks towards the end of the  room and grabs a broom . She sweeps the pieces of the glass while I stare at her in shock. She makes a move to leave the room,but stops.

"You are wrong.  You are here to make a difference and you are not too young. "With that she leaves the room .

I stand up to pace around and keep my fingers busy so I don't smash anything against the wall.

I'm pathetic.  Really really pathetic.  My best friend just died talking withe over the phone. Yet,I'm still here looking for something to smash on the wall. I don't have to smash anything do I? I think about that for a moment before turning to the wall and hitting my knuckles on the wall.

The pain seeps through me but it doesn't match the one already there.  I hit my knuckles again and this time it doesn't sting as the first one . The thought of having no pain aggregates me the more and I continously hitting my knuckles in anger ,sadness, pain . I continue until I see blood, yet I don't feel any pain.

"Sam!!" My mom calls. "What's happening in there?" She sounds panicked.

Oh . you know my best friend just died and I wasn't even there to stay with her. She died in the hands of strangers. Strangers who never cared. Here I am in this room enjoying my life while she is going to be buried in the sand behind juvie, because her mom hasn't claimed her body.

At the thought of this. I break down in tears and I can' t hold it anymore .

"Sam. I'm coming in. Open the door." She prods gently. I bring my blood stained palms to cover my  face and cry the more.

See. Someone cares about me ,but no one cares about her . It's my fault .

If I hadn't been there,then that matron wouldn't have given me that scar and she wouldn't have fought with Joy. She wouldn't have had cancer.

The door opens gently and my mom comes in. The colour drains from her face when she sees the blood on my face and my busted knuckles with blood dripping from it.

"Sam. Oh my goodness.  Are you alright?" She rushes to my side.

Stop. Just stop.I don't deserve this at all. I'm not worthy of this kindness.

I nod and look up at her. She must hate me now.

I wish I hadn't gone to juvie.

That thought brings back memories  I had kept locked up for the past two to three years  now.

"They caused it." I say to myself believing it's the truth.

"Huh?" Mom asks looking up from my wounds that she was nursing.

"They caused it." I repeat it lathering the idea into my head like soap on the hands.

"JANE AND GEORGE CAUSED IT!!!!" I scream very loudly that the sound gave me a splitting headache.

"They did. They did. They did." I repeat moving away from her as if she's poison.

Mom looks like she is about to cry.  I feel like I have lost it,when on the reality  I have.

"Sam. I'm trying to help you. Please don't do this to yourself. You came here for a new life, new beginning.  I'll help you.  I'm a psychologist you know, I'll help you. One of the secrets of letting your past go is opening up." She says in a really soothing voice that calms me. I sigh and she takes it as a go ahead.

"Now. Tell me what happened. "

Finnally ,

We are goingto know why Sam went to juvie. 😊
