I try opening my eyes but the instant throbbing tells me that not only did I drink too much moonshine last night, but today is going to be rough. By the time I reach my old house on the edge of the border I am full on sobbing and can’t catch my breath. I mind linked my mom on my way here the best I could in between sobs. She told me she would be waiting for me with a blanket. When I get to the pathway and shift she drapes the blanket over me and rubs my arms. She starts shushing me and kissing my head, calming me down enough to finally stop crying. We walk quietly into the living room which is across the hall from my dad’s office. He starts to get up from his chair but my mom quickly tells him this was a girl thing and to leave us alone. He hesitates but when mom gives him her signature look he nods his head in understanding and shuts his office doors, leaving us alone.
